FC Halifax Town v Salisbury City: Previous Meetings

There have only ever been three matches between FC Halifax Town and Salisbury City. Daniel Briggs takes a look at how the Shaymen have fared in those fixtures

2013-14 Season – Salisbury 3-1 Halifax – 31/08/13

In Halifax’s last meeting with Salisbury earlier in the season, Neil Aspin’s side were reduced to nine men for the second time in three weeks.

As if having two players sent off in the opening day defeat to Cambridge United wasn’t bad enough, the Shaymen again had two men dismissed at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium.

Unsurprisingly, Halifax were on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline against the Whites. Elliott Frear opened the scoring on 22 minutes, firing confidently past Matt Glennon from ten yards.

Shortly after, Halifax pushed the self-destruct button. On the half hour, Kevin Holsgrove was given an early bath for violent conduct. Ten minutes later, Josh Wilson saw red for an off-the-ball incident.

At that point, Halifax’s task to retrieve anything from the match looked colossal, and so it proved as Luke Ruddick doubled Salisbury’s lead from 18 yards on 69 minutes. Ben Wright made sure of the three points with a third goal, nine minutes from time, when he rifled in from the edge of the penalty area.

The game was gone but Ryan Brett’s own goal gave Halifax a consolation and the visiting contingent something to cheer, on a day when Town contributed significantly to their own downfall.

2007-08 Season – Salisbury 1-0 Halifax – 29/12/07

Meetings between Halifax and Salisbury have been scarce and on the only other previous occasion that the men from West Yorkshire have visited the Raymond McEnhill Stadium, they were also beaten.

Whites’ Andrew Sandell had a 15th minute penalty saved by Town stopper Adam Legzdins, after Matthew Doughty was adjudged to have handled in the area.

Despite that let-off, Halifax struggled to seize the initiative and it was the home side who claimed victory, Liam Feeney coolly slotting home the only goal of the game after 75 minutes.

That win sparked a terrific run for Salisbury. From Boxing Day 2007 to March 2008, the Whites went an impressive 12 matches undefeated, winning eight.

2007-08 Season – Halifax 1-1 Salisbury – 24/11/07

Only once have Halifax welcomed Salisbury to the Shay, that match coming in November 2007.

The 2007-08 season was Salisbury’s first in the Conference after winning promotion via the Blue Square South play-offs the previous campaign.

They arrived at Halifax on a difficult run. Their previous league match had brought a 3-1 success away at York City – their first victory in ten outings.

After a quiet opening period, Wayne Turk scored with a header for Salisbury to raise hopes of a second consecutive win.

But the Shaymen fought back and levelled when Cortez Belle nodded home Matthew Doughty’s cross.

Halifax pushed for a winner and Greg Young spurned a golden chance, meaning the first competitive meeting between Halifax and Salisbury on record, finished all square.
