FC Halifax Town captain Matty Brown hailed the Shaymen’s team spirit after they defeated third-placed Boreham Wood 2-1 to move nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Brown opened the scoring with a thunderous header before Mike Fondop-Talom put the Shaymen back in front after Morgan Ferrier levelled the scores shortly after the break.

Victory for Halifax moves them up to 15th in the table and nine points clear of the relegation zone and just three points adrift of the top half.

“I think everybody knew what an important game today was,” Brown explained to ShaymenTV after the game.

“We knew that today we could more or less secure our future in this league. We made a few changes that we worked on in training this week and we knew how to combat Boreham Wood’s threats, which worked, in the first-half especially.”

“In the first ten minutes of the second-half, we struggled. But, like I’ve said all along in the time that I’ve been here, the team spirit shows again.”

“We kicked on again and managed to put ourselves in front and I thought we were deserved winners in the end.”

Brown led the post-match celebrations in the immediate aftermath, with a few big fist-bumps to the South Stand, a perfect encapsulation of the significance of this result.

“Obviously, I was here last time when it didn’t go so well,” continued the skipper. “Bouncing back from the league below was important and this is another big step, cementing ourselves in this league.”

“It’s about us building for next year now and looking to go one better and see if we can compete at the top end of the league.”

“For me, there’s no reason why we can’t do that. Obviously, we’ve been through difficult spells this season, but we’ve rode the storm and come out of the other side and it looks like we’re safe now.”

“That doesn’t mean we’re going to take our foot off the gas or anything like that. The 50 point mark is always a nice achievement in this league.”
