David Lynch felt the better side lost following FC Halifax Town’s defeat to Dover Athletic.
The midfielder was left frustrated by the result, thinking Billy Heath’s men deserved more than a second home defeat on the bounce.
When Tom Denton scored his and his team’s first goal of the season, the game appeared to be heading to a third successive draw for the Shaymen, after Dover captain Mitch Brundle opened the scoring. However, it was the visitors who left the field with all three points following Toni Sho-Silva’s strike deep into injury time.
“We’ve been punished, we certainly didn’t deserve to lose. If anything, we were the better team in the second half,” he said immediately after the game.
“We upped the tempo and won a lot more second balls.
“We moved the ball well in the second half and we looked like the only team playing any football.
“They’ve broke, got a two v one down the left hand side and there was a midfield runner, which was disappointing. I can only hold my hands up for [Brundle] having a free header in the six yard box, it’s not good enough.
Despite the loss, he was complimentary of his team mate’s performances.
“I think [Denton] has been absolutely outstanding, probably our stand out player. Cliff [Moyo] has come back after being out. Matty Brown and [Scott Garner] have started the season really well. I thought there were good performances over the pitch, it was just a bit of naivety.
“It’s a step up isn’t it? You’re playing against full time teams and it’s certainly a wake up call for me.
“It’s bitterly disappointing but we need to hold our heads up and go again Saturday.”
The 24 year old made his first start of the campaign during the loss, having not made an appearance in the previous three outings. However, following it he was highly critical of his night.
“The gaffer has given me an opportunity tonight and personally, I think I was a bit off it to be honest,” he admitted.
“From a personal point of view, I don’t think I was anywhere near fitness wise. I know it was my first game but I can only get that by playing games.
“I got better as the game went on, but certainly sloppy at times on the ball, that just comes with tiredness
Despite his lack of minutes, Lynch is content with waiting for Heath to give him his chance to shine.
“The gaffer can only pick the squad, he’s got his reasons behind it. He’s looked at it and picked what he thought was best,” he explained.
“I’m not the type of character to start throwing my toys out of the pram. You just need to make sure that when you take your opportunities like, tonight, you take them.
“I’ll always give 100 percent, I just felt a bit leggy and a bit sloppy, but that comes from not playing. But if the gaffer decides to change it then it’s a squad game.
If you get an opportunity you need to take it better than I did tonight.”
