FC Halifax Town took their debut in this years West Riding County Cup. The Shaymen travelled to the Southerners Stadium in Leeds, Town would need penalties to be well drilled Ammers side.

Jerome Binnom-Williams found himself in the odd position on the scoresheet to score Towns equaliser, after Adam Field scored a minute before the break.

Pete Wild made eight changes to the side that played at Woking, giving senior debuts from the start to Will Appleyard, Jay Benn and Jake Taylor.

On a cold foggy night, it was not one for spectators, and the football on show wasn’t doing much to brighten up spirits. Neither side tested the keeper for the first 15 minutes.
IfΒ Dayle Southwell was a inch or two smaller the striker could have got a free header on a powerful cross. Taylor could’ve had a dream debut by putting The Shaymen ahead, after good play on the left by Jerome Binnom-Williams and Jeff King a fiery cross came to the young winger but, Taylor handled the ball 12 yards out in a attempt to bring the ball under his control.

The Ammers weren’t going down without a fight though. Disciplined in defence, keeping it tight at the back forcing The Shaymen midfield to try and make that miracle pass to pick the lock. Then out of nowhere a speculative shot from 40 yards out from the Ammers midfield worried Appleyard, but it sailed wide inches away from a top goal.

Town came out the traps in the second half, needing to exert themselves on the front foot and get an early goal. Binnom-Williams was that man, the big left back nipped in-front of his man as the ball came into the box to get his side level two minutes after the restart.

As the second half went on Wild put more of his youngsters onto the pitch, Matt Rowson, Nick Crane and Mossimo Ciccarelli all made their first senior appearances for The Shaymen.
Unfortunately the latest home grown talent were unable to affect the game in any great way and the game finished 1-1 and we headed to penalties.

Appleyard saved the first penalty and Dayle Southwell scored the first for Town to give The Shaymen the upper hand in the shoot-out. Then Niall Maher, Jack Earing, Liam Nolan and Jeff King all scored to secure the victory.

After the game Pete Wild had this to say after the game.

“Great to get the lads on who needed minutes, happy to get some of the young lads on. The two lads who graduated from our academy who have been out on loan puts them back in the fold.
We have got some good players in our academy and by progressing in this competition we hope to give them more opportunities to be around the first team.”
