The past decade and a half has been a tale of complete mirror opposites for the two teams whom incidentally are at opposite sides of the country also. Whilst Town were liquidated and demoted three divisions in the summer of 2008 The Glovers of Yeovil were visiting West Yorkshire to face the likes of Huddersfield Town, Bradford City and Leeds United. The latter following their relegation to League One printing shirts asking ‘Where’s Yeovil!?’ (Leeds cheekily pinpointed it on a map printed on the back of said shirt) such was the Somerset outfit’s meteoric rise. Beating Brentford 2-1 in the League One (Division Three) on the 19th May 2013 at Wembley then Gary Johnson’s Glovers reached the Championship (Division Two) for the first time in their history.

Two weeks earlier Town had gained promotion back to the fifth tier beating Brackley Town 1-0 however despite this three divisions still separated the clubs.

Though this is one of the more recent matchups in The Shaymen’s history, Yeovil Town are woven throughout our non-league adventures of the past. They were one of the first non-league opponents newly relegated Halifax faced in the Vauxhall Conference and as cited above the match ended in a stalemate. Sub Filson grabbing a late Town equaliser. Names like Billy Barr, Chris Lucketti, and Jamie Paterson etc hopefully bringing readers a huge wave of nostalgia. The Shaymen finishing that first season in 13th place (of a possible 22), Yeovil 19th but only four points behind The Shaymen.

The Shaymen did the double in 1997/98 as they stormed to the Vauxhall Conference Title. A minute’s silence prior to the match on the 5th September 1997 at The Shay observing “the tragic death of Princess Di” as (now a late himself) Jack Haymer reminded viewers of the compilation tape for the season. Geoff Horsfield’s first hat trick of that season seeing Town 3-1 winners on the night and early pacesetters in the league. A Jamie Paterson penalty at Huish Park gaining the three points away on the 21st February 1998.

Once again following Town’s second relegation from the Football League Yeovil were relatively early opponents once more. This time it was the turn of the green and white hoops to storm to the title; re-branded the Nationwide Conference. 2,126 inside Huish Park on the 21st September 2002 saw The Glovers brush Town aside 3-0 with the return match at The Shay on 4th March 2003 seeing the league leaders come out on top 3-2. Cult figure Simon Parke bagging twice for Town that day.

Goalscorers vs Yeovil

3 – Geoff Horsfield (1997/98).

2 – Simon Parke (2002/03) & Jamie Paterson (1994/95 & 1997/98).

1 – Colin Lambert (1994/95), Dave German (1994/95) & Martin Filson (1993/94).
