After yesterday’s dramatic 2-1 win for FC Halifax Town against Wrexham in the Vanarama National League, the official website caught up with Niall Maher to get his thoughts on the match.
The match was the final home game of the season for The Shaymen and they sent the fans home happy, which is exactly what the players wanted to do according to Maher:
“We got what we deserved in the end. We give 100% out on the field and we wanted to finish on a high with it being our last home game of the season and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”
Maher himself is known for his toughness and versatility and yesterday he found himself playing right-back. Although it’s not his natural position, Maher was a more than capable replacement for Jacob Hanson.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve played there but I’ve got a lot of experience there. It’s good that the manager trusts me to go out there and play a position that he knows I’ve played before. I just tried to give my all and help us get the victory.”
When asked if the 2-1 win over promotion chasing Wrexham gives the side confidence going into the last game of the season, Maher replied:
“Yeah it does. We’re safe now but obviously we want to finish as high as we can now. Fylde will be a tough test next week, but we’ll go there full of confidence and hopefully get another three points.”
Finally, Maher was full of praise for The Shaymen faithful who have supported the team through thick and thin this season:
“We want to thank them for their support throughout the season, both home and away they’ve been brilliant for us. Sometimes this season we’ve not got what they’ve wanted but we give our all and we stick at it together and they’ve been a brilliant twelfth man.”
The Shaymen will take on AFC Fylde next Saturday and we hope to see you all there supporting the lads in the final match of the season. The full interview with Niall Maher is available right now on Shaymen TV.
