FC Halifax Town came from behind at the Gander Green Stadium against Sutton United after going one goal down early within the second half courtesy of a deflected free kick. The official website caught up with Sam Johnson on his thoughts on today’s game.

“We knew before we came here it was going to be difficult, they’re physical and put long balls into the box but I thought we stood up to the challenge and I think it was a fair point and I am happy with it.”

Playing on Sutton’s 3G AstroTurf provides a somewhat different playing surface for the Town players, Sam expresses his opinion on the artificial surface.

“I think it was fine, we have played on here before and we trained on it on Friday, so we are used to it and we have done it in preseason. Personally, I don’t mind training and playing on it, it’s clean and provides a good bounce for me and think we were happy on it today.

The Shaymen have adopted a new approach this season, trying to gain the advantage on the counter attack starting from when Sam Johnson gets the ball

“The manager wants us running forward, all the forward players especially. Just as soon as I get it I’ll send it, I think we were unlucky for it not to come off at times today.”

Town went a goal down after Simon Lenighan brought down Sutton midfielder Craig Eastmond before Kenny Davis smashed the ball into the oncoming Halifax players from 20 yards out which deflected passed the Town shot stopper.

“People just through their bodies on the line and its took an unfortunate deflection off someone, not sure who from and I got a good enough hand onto it but just couldn’t reach it unfortunately and its gone in the back of the net.

Looking forwards and onto Tuesday night with an away trip to North Wales to face Wrexham who currently top the table, the Shaymen keeper explained:

“We will prepare correctly and rest up over the weekend before back at the training ground on Monday.”
