FC Halifax Town fell to a heavy 6–2 defeat at The Shay, despite periods of promising play, as a clinical Southend United side took full advantage of their opportunities.

The Shaymen started brightly and looked composed in possession, but the visitors were ruthless throughout and punished defensive lapses to take control of the contest.

Southend immediately put Town under pressure from kick-off, winning an early free-kick near the technical area, though the hosts defended the initial threat well.

Town responded with a well-worked move of their own. Turner-Cooke capitalised on a momentary lapse in the Southend midfield, feeding Josh Hmami, whose low effort drifted narrowly wide of the right post.

Shaun Hobson then produced strong defending to deny the visitors, but Southend soon found their breakthrough.

In the sixth minute, Jack Bridge held the ball well on the edge of the box before laying it off to Oli Coker. The forward struck first time from distance, and the ball bounced beyond Sam Johnson to give the Shrimpers a 1–0 lead.

Town pushed for an equaliser, with Will Smith sending a precise long ball to Hmami, whose effort was straight at the goalkeeper.

The Shaymen grew into the game and were rewarded in the 19th minute. Josh Hmami intercepted possession on halfway, allowing Cody Johnson to thread a superb first-time pass through to Will Harris. The striker raced clear and fired home emphatically for his 28th goal of the season.

But Southend responded instantly, forcing Johnson into two excellent saves to keep the scores level.

Southend were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark when Will Smith mistimed a challenge on Andy Dallas. Dallas converted confidently, sending Johnson the wrong way.

Town almost equalised again when Turner-Cooke’s corner found Smith, whose header beat the goalkeeper but was cleared off the line.

Southend extended their lead in the 42nd minute. A quick move down the right saw Dallas square the ball to Harry Cardwell, whose effort crept past Johnson.

Dallas nearly added another moments later, but Johnson stood firm. Hmami had another chance before the break, but his shot was again straight at the keeper.

The half ended with Town needing a response.

Town began the second half with intent, but Southend struck again in the 52nd minute. A Bridge delivery caused confusion between Ashley Palmer and Will Smith, allowing Coker to pounce and fire home his second of the afternoon.

Southend continued to threaten, with Cardwell forcing another strong save from Johnson.

The visitors made it 5–1 on 59 minutes when Coker’s corner found captain Gus Morris unmarked, and he finished clinically.

Both sides made changes on the hour mark, with Town introducing AJ Warburton and Owen Bray.

Turner-Cooke was booked in the 67th minute for a strong challenge on Cav Miley, with James Golding also cautioned for his reaction.

Adam Lakeland made further substitutions in the 80th minute, bringing on Adetoro, Waters and Morris.

Town pulled one back in the 85th minute when substitute Kieron Morris held off defenders on the edge of the box before firing a left-footed strike past Collin Ndi for his first league goal for the club.

Southend made further changes before sealing the win with the final kick of the game. Jack Bridge fired a dangerous ball across the face of goal, where Leon Parillon arrived at the far post to make it 6–2.

A difficult afternoon for the Shaymen, who showed moments of quality but were undone by Southend’s sharp attacking play and clinical finishing. Town will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next fixture
