Adam Lakeland named an unchanged line-up for this crucial play-off clash following the narrow midweek defeat to Oldham. Scunthorpe United arrived at The Shay in strong form, sitting fifth, while Town were aiming for their first win over the Iron since 2022.
Town created the first opening of the afternoon when Shaun Hobson lifted a precise ball over the top for Will Harris. The striker struck first time toward the bottom corner, but Louis Jones reacted sharply to push the effort away.
Despite Halifax’s bright start, it was the visitors who struck first after a costly defensive error. Will Smith under hit a back-pass to Sam Johnson, allowing Pat Jones to pounce, round the goalkeeper and roll the ball into the empty net. It was Jones’ first Enterprise National League goal since joining from Chester, where he had scored seven times in National League North.
Jones almost doubled his tally moments later when he burst through one-on-one, but Johnson recovered superbly to smother the ball at his feet.
Town responded well, and once again Hobson was the creator. His pinpoint cross found Harris, who powered a header into the top-left corner to level the game. It was Harris’ 20th goal of the season and came against his former loan club.
Both sides exchanged half-chances as the half progressed, with the best falling to Danny Whitehall, whose curling free-kick from 25 yards was well saved by Johnson. The game remained finely balanced at the interval.
Town began the second half strongly, dominating possession and pushing the visitors back. Their best chance came when Smith rose well to meet a cross, but Jones held the header confidently.
Scunthorpe, however, continued to threaten on the counter. Jones looked set to break clear again, but Hobson defended brilliantly, using his strength to shepherd the forward off the ball.
Midway through the half, AJ Warburton drove down the right and found Harris on the edge of the box. His effort deflected into the path of Josh Hmami, who swivelled and struck first time from 12 yards, but his shot flashed narrowly wide of the near post.
Warburton grew increasingly influential, creating another opening when he threaded a pass to Hmami, whose long-range strike drifted wide before Harris attempted to redirect it goalward.
Scunthorpe then countered dangerously after Town committed bodies forward for a long throw. Whitehall dispossessed Warburton and released Roberts, who raced through one-on-one with Johnson. The Town keeper stood tall and made an excellent low save. From the resulting corner, Howe headed into the net, but the referee disallowed it for a foul on Johnson.
Minutes later, controversy struck. A disputed free-kick—one that prompted a booking for Lakeland—was whipped in by Roberts with pace. Howe rose above everyone and nodded in from close range to give the visitors an 81st-minute lead.
Town pushed hard through eight minutes of added time, but Scunthorpe held firm to secure all three points, strengthening their play-off position and leaving Halifax to rue missed chances.
