In recent years, the two sides have experienced similar fortunes, both dissolving and reforming with new clubs far down the football pyramid before fighting their way back to the higher levels of non-league.
Earlier in the season the two sides opened their Vanarama National League North campaigns against each other at the Coombe Abbey Arena in Warwickshire with the visitors coming away with a convincing 3-2 victory.
Tom Denton, on his competitive debut for Halifax, scored a hat-trick to sink a poor Nuneaton side and give Town fans a glimpse of the goal scoring run that lay ahead from the target man.
Kevin Langmead and Aaron Williams scored for the home side but two was simply not enough for a Halifax attack that was in fine form.
Prior to this the last time Halifax Town met Nuneaton Town was two seasons ago in the National League when a late Lois Maynard goal secured the win for the Shaymen after James Armson’s red card turned the tie in Halifax’s favour.
Armson’s dismissal for a foul on Scott McManus was followed instantly by a James Bolton header to give Town the lead before Maynard sealed the victory during stoppage time.
Halifax haven’t lost to Nuneaton since Boro’ did the double over the Shaymen in 2012. The Shaymen failed to score a single goal against the midland club that season and lost 3-0 at the MBi Shay Stadium.
Goals from England C international Gareth Dean, Danny Glover and striker Andy Brown allowed Nuneaton to join Halifax in the play-off places of the National League North. Andy Brown was also the scorer four days later in a one-nil victory for Nuneaton at the then named Triton Showers Community Arena.
That season Halifax finished fourth, sixteen points behind winners Hyde United while Nuneaton’s late charge saw them snatch the final play-off spot and beat Gainsborough Trinity 1-0 in the final to claim promotion to the National League.
