FC Halifax Town secured progression from the group stage after a goalless draw against Newcastle at The Shay, following an evenly contested and hard-fought encounter.
Newcastle got the game underway, with both sides starting cautiously as they looked to find their rhythm. Town had an early penalty appeal when Max Wright drove towards the Newcastle box and picked out Jack Jenkins, but the forward was crowded out by the Magpies defence and referee Callum Jones ruled there was insufficient contact.
The opening exchanges were largely scrappy, with neither side able to create clear openings. Newcastle showed moments of tidy possession, but the Shaymen’s defensive partnership of Jevon Mills and Adam Adetoro stood firm.
Owen Devonport was brought down in a promising area, allowing Jay Turner-Cooke an early sight of goal from a free kick, though his effort failed to beat the first man. Another foul by Newcastle soon followed, resulting in Charlie McArthur receiving the first booking of the game in the 24th minute. Turner-Cooke’s delivery was again dealt with by the Magpies defence.
Town earned the first corner of the match after a dangerous ball from Adetoro was cut out, but the resulting set-piece came to nothing. Turner-Cooke later forced the Newcastle goalkeeper into action with a free kick, though it was straight at James Taylor.
Newcastle’s best chance of the first half arrived when Park Sueng-Soo crossed for Ben Parkinson, who volleyed over from close range. Town responded when Angelo Cappello found Devonport in the box, but the move broke down and was cleared. The sides went into the break level at 0–0.
Halifax started the second half brightly, with Cappello bursting down the wing and testing Taylor early on. Town continued to apply pressure and came close when Turner-Cooke skipped past his man and delivered a low ball to Devonport, who flicked just wide, though the flag was raised.
Further chances followed as Max Wright crossed for Thierry Latte-Fairweather, whose header was safely held. Newcastle made the first substitution, introducing Alfie Harrison for Anthony Munda, before Will Harris replaced Max Wright for Town.
Cody Johnson’s powerful run earned Town a corner, with his follow-up effort flying over. Turner-Cooke later struck a superb free kick that beat the keeper but rattled the crossbar, before another penalty appeal was waved away after he was brought down in the box.
Newcastle nearly stole it late on as Miodrag Pivas forced a strong save from Nat Ford, with Joe Brayson firing the rebound over. After four minutes of added time, the referee brought the game to a close.
Yet another great chance for town as Turner-Cooke picks up the ball and runs through the Magpies defence but its scrappy he wins the ball back but his shot is wide
Adam Lakeland looks to make his final changes of the game with Jay Turner-Cooke replaced by Jo Cummins and Sean Tarima replaced by Harvey Sutcliffe.
The ref blew for full time as the Shaymen and Magpies looked forward to a penalty shootout, but as the table stands the Shaymen are through the group stage and into the next round of the competition.
The penalty shootout was tightly contested, with both sides level deep into sudden death. After a miss from David Kawa, the shootout remained locked at 4–4. Cody Johnson then saw his effort saved, allowing Newcastle to edge ahead, but Jo Cummins responded to keep Town alive. With the scores level at 6–6, Zak Emmerson sealed the victory by confidently converting his penalty.
