It’s time to honour the fast starters after a lively first four weeks in the Enterprise National League North.
We all know nothing is ever decided in August, but South Shields certainly showed why they want to be considered as challengers this time around.
Ian Watson has built a squad this summer seemingly fit to put in a sustained bid for promotion – and it was a near perfect opening month.
The club recorded five wins and a draw as they started in style and ended as the only undefeated team.
Watson’s team started by edging past Marine before winning at Leamington and Alfreton Town.
Shields showed they mean business when they put four past last season’s Promotion Finalists Chester, before a character-filled victory at Bedford Town.
It wasn’t quite the clean sweep, drawing 2-2 at home to Buxton in their last game of the month, but the manager feels his team have shown they can react to adversity on top of putting in stylish performances.
If the first few weeks are anything to go by, we have quite a number of contenders for the Golden Boot.
King’s Lynn Town striker Michael Gyasi appears to be one of them – and he takes the Player of the Month award after a sensational start.
He kicked off the new campaign with an opening day goal against AFC Telford, and it was a sign of things to come.
He also hit a treble against Spennymoor Town and the leveller at Darlington, before finishing the month with two more goals and an assist against Merthyr Town, helping him clinch his prize.
Congratulations to our two winners!
