FC Halifax Town entertain Matlock Town as they kick-off their FA Trophy campaign looking to retain the trophy. We look at some players who have appeared for both sides down the years.
The most notable player to have featured for both sides is now FC Halifax Town’s club captain Liam King. The 28-year-old joined Northern Premier League Premier Division on a free transfer in 2009 after being released by Rotherham United. King was on the books at Matlock for four years but only managed to make 36 appearances for the Derbyshire before joining North Ferriby. Liam was a stalwart in North Ferriby’s side helping them gain promotion to the National League before following Billy Heath to Halifax Town this summer.
Another player to have turned out for both teams is Grimsby Town striker Shaun Tuton. The 25-year-old spent the first few years of his career in the lower leagues playing for Belper Town, Buxton, Teversal and Matlock Town. Neil Aspin signed Tuton from Buxton and impressed on the books at The Shaymen scoring 10 goals in 27 matches being compared to Jamie Vardy before Barnsley snapped him up giving him the chance to play in the Football League.
Ross Hannah is also a player to have appeared for both Halifax Town and Matlock. Hannah’s career really took off at the latter having scored goals for fun in his three-year spell with the club. The forward scored an eye watering 102 goals in 130 appearances for Matlock winning a few awards, and as you would probably guess this feat did not go unnoticed. Bradford City snapped up the striker, he rarely featured for the Football League side and went on loan to Halifax where scored an impressive seven goals in just 11 matches. Hannah is now at Barrow after spending time at Grimsby Town and Chester City.
Former Sheffield Wednesday youngster Liam Needham also ran out for both teams earlier in his career. After failing to impress at Wednesday Needham moved onto Notts County where he spent two seasons before returning to Gainsborough Trinity for his second spell. Halifax snapped Needham up in 2011 and impressed in the second half of his first season. He cemented his place in the side after a loan spell at Bradford Park Avenue before making the move to Matlock Town in 2013 and has enjoyed three years in Derbyshire to where he still plays his football to this day.
Other players to also feature for both sides are Craig Nelthorpe, Jamie Jackson and Nathan Joynes.
