Maidenhead United: It Was Tough To Take

Following FC Halifax Town’s 3-2 defeat against Maidenhead United, manager Pete Wild spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game.

“It hasn’t been the greatest preparation,” Wild said. “With all the injuries there were new partnerships and I had to dig deep into my squad. This showed early on as we looked nervous and tentative. We certainly did not have the same flow and the same swagger we have had in previous games. It took time for those partnerships to grow which led to mistakes. The first goal was two mistakes, one high up and then deeper. We absolutely gifted them the first goal. We did liven up after that goal and we did look better. After our goal we started to rush things, and this caused another mistake. We then get done off a set-piece. I felt we were on the front foot for most of the second half. We were the only team that was going to score, and we got the equaliser, and then we took our foot off the gas. We cannot defend like we did today and expect to win football matches. We can’t allow mistakes like that to let them in. I’ve said to the lads that all the praise they got for Bromley and Wrexham slapped us in the face today. Fair play to Maidenhead for taking their chances well. This result has certainly brought us back down to work with a bang.

Town were without Luke Summerfield who has become a key player this season. Whilst the injury is disappointing, Wild is confident he has the players to step up and fill the gap.

“Luke has done really well for us this season,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “He is a big loss to us, but we have got enough in the squad. Unfortunately, he will be out for a couple of months. Players need to step up to the plate now. I’ll look to potentially try and recruit someone to try and help us out in that position as well. Despite this, I felt we had lots of possession, especially in the second half. It was good to see Martin Woods getting half an hour, and in an ideal world I would have liked to have started Jamie but having played two games this week that wasn’t possible having recently come back from injury. It’s a ‘needs must’ in some positions today and all in all it has not been a good day.”

Town got their second equaliser in the second half following a Tom Bradbury strike from a corner. Wild felt this was a fair reflection of the game up to that point and was disappointed the team couldn’t hold on.

“We’ve scored off of two set-pieces,” Wild said. “It was pleasing to see the team get back level, but then we took our foot off the gas. It was tough to take as I felt we were doing well and were really pushing and looking threatening. It was gutting when that last goal went in because we had battled hard to get back into the game twice.”

The Shaymen host Hartlepool United this Tuesday, 7:00pm kick off. Wild is confident the team will turn things around and take all three points.

“It’s a chance to put things right,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “It’s a big game, a big fixture. They have had another great result today. But we will look to put things right on Tuesday and we will work hard to change things and make sure we get the result.”
