FC Halifax Town battled hard at The Shay but were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Hartlepool United in a game that saw plenty of attacking intent but lacked the crucial finishing touch.
The Pools got the game underway at The Shay, and an early foul from Hartlepool led to the Shaymen’s first attack, which was quickly dealt with by the visitors’ defence. Hartlepool’s opening foray saw Nathan Sheron fire a shot from outside the box that Halifax captain Sam Johnson pushed out for a corner, which was comfortably claimed.
Halifax responded immediately, with Sean Tarima delivering a long ball into the box, but Owen Devonport’s header went over. Will Hugill set up Will Harris soon after, but his shot went straight at Hartlepool keeper George Evans. The Shaymen continued to press, with Josh Hmami and Owen Bray combining well, but the visitors defended resolutely, and several corners failed to produce a breakthrough.
End-to-end football continued as Halifax dominated possession and looked to exploit any gaps in Hartlepool’s defence. The Pools’ rare attacks were neutralised by the solid partnership of Hobson and Mills at the back. The first booking of the game came when Hartlepool’s Jay Ben brought down Jack Jenkins, earning a yellow card.
As the first half drew to a close, both sides had chances, but neither could convert. Sam Johnson made a key save from a Hartlepool corner to keep the score level at 0-0 at the break.
The second half began with Halifax on the attack. Angelo Cappello raced down the wing to deliver a cross to Devonport, but he could not get a proper header on target. Hmami had a shot from distance comfortably held by Evans, and Hugill and Bray combined to create further openings, though nothing was converted. Halifax earned a penalty in the 62nd minute after Cappello was fouled by Nathan Sheron, but Will Harris’ effort was scuffed and saved by Evans.
Hartlepool then began to push forward, but the Shaymen’s defence stood firm. Devonport tested Evans with a long-range effort that was deflected for a corner, while Harris headed a whipped cross from Cappello just wide. Despite constant pressure, Halifax were unable to break through Hartlepool’s organised back line.
The breakthrough came when Jaime Miley delivered a dangerous ball into the box, which Sam Johnson could not hold, allowing Adam Campbell to slot home and give the visitors the lead. Halifax pressed for an equaliser, with Adam Lakeland introducing three substitutes in the 78th minute Cody Johnson, Max Wright who hasn’t payed for the Shaymen since their 2-1 victory over Forest Green back in March, and Dylan Crowe in an effort to turn the game around.
Halifax continued to create chances, with Crowe sending a deep ball into the box for Harris, who was brought down, but no penalty was given. Multiple corners and free kicks in the closing stages failed to yield a goal. Hmami and Bray combined well, and Cody Johnson linked up with Hmami in the final minute, but the defence cleared effectively.
Despite some good attacking play and persistent pressure, Halifax could not find the crucial final touch, and Hartlepool held on to claim a 1-0 victory at The Shay. While the Shaymen showed attacking intent and created chances throughout, it was a disappointing afternoon as they were unable to convert their efforts into goals.
