Oliver Thompson spoke to Nathan Clarke about his thoughts on the brilliant 4-1 victory away at Ebbsfleet, and of course, THAT goal.

“We’re really, really happy- the sending off affected the game, but it didn’t change our plan, we stuck to that really well. It was a good away performance and we’ve got off to a fantastic start which is something we were desperate for.”

“The morale in the team is really good. We’ve got some new lads in, which gives us a fresh look. They’re excited, they’re desperate to do well for the club. We’ve also got a really good core that have stayed and are wanting to progress again. It’s a really good mix, and everyone is tuned into what the manager wants, and that’s driven by some of the senior lads; myself and Browny, who again was excellent today. Everyone’s dragging in the right direction and morale wise, this will be a big boost again.”

Clarke is now into his 18th season as a professional footballer, but surely won’t have scored a better goal than his effort this afternoon. He talked us through his ridiculous 70-yard lob.

“I’d seen it a couple of times, he keeps off his line, he stays quite high, a bit of a sweeper role really. I’d seen it previously where we had another free kick from deep and we knocked it out wide to Sanmi, I had a look at it then and I possibly could’ve done it then! The referee gave us another free kick inside our own half and I had a quick look and saw he looked like he was gambling on it going out wide again, so I thought, “there’s only a minute left, why not!” “

“I’m delighted obviously, if it had went over, fair enough, but it’s nestled in lovely, and I’m absolutely delighted!”
