FC Halifax Town defeated Eastleigh in the first game of 2022 played at the Shay Stadium. In what was a 4-0 victory, the middle of the pitch was dominated by Kian Spence who spoke to Shaymen TV post-match.

Spence played a pivotal part in individual battles to help Halifax to a comfortable win, and he gave an assessment on the game, “The first-half wasn’t as good as we would have expected at home,” Spence began. “We’re in form at the Shay, and we always play good football. It was a mistake from Eastleigh that gifted us a goal – good finish from Slewy (Jordan Slew). But I thought we should’ve created more chances and dominated the ball in the first half. Although, we did that in the second half and luckily, we got three goals. As the game went on it got more and more comfortable for us.”

Prior to Halifax’s match with Eastleigh, the Shaymen played out a 1-1 draw at Grimsby Town – a game that was live on BT Sport. Therefore, a TV audience would have watched Kian score for Town from the comfort of their own home. However, last season Halifax played King’s Lynn Town on BT Sport, and the midfielder sadly missed out on the match day squad. In a match programme interview before that fixture last year, Spence was keen on the idea of playing live on TV.

Kian may have missed the opportunity to play on live television last year, but when given the chance this time around, he made the most of it and spoke about scoring in front of the cameras, “I can’t actually remember that much about it, to be honest,” he amusingly said. “I watched it back and saw myself running from our box to their box, and I was thinking why am I running straight forward? But Jordan (Slew) has a shot that gets parried straight into my path and I was there to capitalise on it.”

Another comparison from the 2020/21 and current season is the number of starts and game time that Spence has collected, “I’m delighted to get my chance this season,” Spence said. “I’ve had a good run of games now, I think this was my 20th start in a row. It’s just good to get out there because I watched a lot of the boys playing last season. It was good because I’d just come in so I could see what the lads were about. But this season I am loving it, I couldn’t ask for anymore – the fans being back is great too.”

Spence ended his chat to Shaymen TV by looking ahead to the next outing which will be at The Shay Stadium this coming Tuesday against Grimsby, “We need to be better than how we were at their place,” he stated. “At home we play better football and I don’t think we showed enough of us playing football at their place, so hopefully, we can do that. Also, it’d be nice to get the win and more points on the board.”
