FC Halifax Town produced a dominant attacking display as they defeated Derby County U21s 6-2, with six different moments of quality helping the Shaymen secure a convincing victory.

Town started brightly and immediately put Derby under pressure, winning a corner inside the opening minute. The Shaymen continued to control the early stages and were rewarded with the opening goal after just nine minutes.

Amari Morgan-Smith received a pass across the Derby box before finding Conor Carty, who unleashed a stunning strike into the top-left corner beyond Samuel Kane to put Halifax 1-0 ahead.

The Shaymen continued to dominate, with Arian Allen coming close to doubling the lead in the 17th minute after being played through by Morgan-Smith, but he was unable to convert.

Derby registered their first real opportunity two minutes later when Cruz Allan went on a solo run and tested True Grant, who made a strong save.

The visitors levelled from the penalty spot in the 30th minute. Justin Oguntolu confidently sent his effort towards the bottom-left corner, with Grant getting a hand to the ball but unable to keep it out.

Halifax restored their lead seven minutes later. Allen delivered a dangerous cross into the box, which eventually fell to Morgan-Smith after Ben Tollit headed the ball down. The forward struck first time, with his effort hitting the post before finding the back of the net.

However, Derby responded again just before half-time. A free-kick from halfway led to a perfectly weighted through ball that split the Halifax defence, allowing Owen Eames to race through and finish calmly past Grant to make it 2-2.

The Shaymen responded almost immediately after the restart. A corner from Tollit caused chaos inside the Derby penalty area, and after Carty was unable to get a clean touch, Morgan-Smith reacted quickest to nudge the ball past Kane and restore Halifax’s lead.

Town then began to pull away. Allen produced one of the highlights of the afternoon in the 53rd minute, cutting inside from the left and beating two defenders before firing a spectacular effort from outside the box into the top-right corner to make it 4-2.

Halifax continued to make changes, with Will Hugill and Zak Gilsenan introduced before a further triple substitution saw David Kawa, Owen Bray and Connor Douglas enter the action.

The Shaymen extended their advantage in the 70th minute. Following a free-kick just outside the Derby box, Gilsenan delivered towards the back post, where Max Bardell rose highest to head home and make it 5-2.

Just two minutes later, Halifax added a sixth. Derby’s defence afforded Owen Bray too much space outside the box, and he punished them with a low-driven finish that flew into the bottom corner.

The Shaymen remained firmly in control for the remainder of the game, comfortably shutting down Derby’s attacks and seeing out an impressive 6-2 victory.

It was a commanding performance from Halifax, who combined attacking quality with strong control after half-time to turn a closely contested first half into a convincing victory.
