Dagenham & Redbridge: Match Report

FC Halifax Town’s play-off aspirations were dealt a blow following today’s 3 v 0 defeat away to Dagenham & Redbridge.

Injuries to Jack Earing, Jamie Allen and top scorer Jake Hyde hampered Pete Wild’s selection options for the trip as did Danny Williams’ three match suspension.  This resulted in 3 changes to the starting line-up that faced Boreham Wood a week ago with Jack Senior, Tom Bradbury and Tahvon Campbell coming into the starting eleven.

Dagenham had the first effort at goal with Angelo Balanta just off target with a 25-yard shot. Town replied with a low cross from Senior that was turned towards goal by Kieran Green with the ball deflecting wide of the target.  A corner was awarded despite Town’s appeals for handball. Nathan Clarke headed a Martin Woods free kick back across goal but couldn’t find a teammate.

Paul McCallum signaled his threat with a pair of headers that were off target with The Shaymen remaining a danger on the counterattack.  Trickery from Jeff King saw him work a shooting position and his curling left foot shot just flew narrowly wide.

The hosts took the lead in the 34th minute when Matt Robinson found himself in space on the left side of the pitch and his low cross was converted by Da Silva Vilhete whose first-time shot gave Sam Johnson no chance.  Town threatened with another King cross that Green was just unable to get to, but it was Dagenham who found the net again in first half stoppage time.  A free kick on from Will Wright was emphatically headed home by McCallum and the half ended with a 2-goal advantage to the home side.

Town wasted an opportunity early into the 2nd period.  Neil Byrne latched onto a loose ball and surged forward exchanging passes with Jeff King but the shot went over the bar from 12 yards out. Tahvon Campbell beat an opponent in the penalty area but his shot was deflected into the arms of Eliot Justham in the Dagenham goal. With Town looking for a way back onto the game it was the home side who added to their lead.  A Will Wright free kick found Vilhete and his cross was netted at the near post by Angelo Balanta.

There was no way back for Pete Wild’s side.  Jeff King forced Justham into a low save but in truth Town never looked like finding their way back into the game.

It’s another away trip in a week’s time to Maidenhead United.
