FC Halifax Town beat Dagenham & Redbridge 2-0 on the opening day of the season. Luke Summerfield spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game, his penalty, the clean sheet, and Stockport County.

“Delighted to be honest,” Summerfield said. “It was a great performance from start to finish in tough conditions out there. To start like that is a massive boost for us. We have had a massive preseason really, and we have done well. Obviously, we’ve had a few injuries but today was a massive result for us.”

The Shaymen took the lead courtesy of a Summerfield penalty in the 45th minute. The midfielder was delighted with his contribution and wants to give more for the team.

“On a personal note it was nice,” Summerfield told Shaymen TV. “I’ll say it every time, it’s not personal it is team game. Going in at half time, and taking the lead just before, was a massive boost. We rode a little bit of pressure in the first half, but we deserved to go in at half time with the goal.”

Town held on to keep a clean sheet, with Summerfield pleased at the performance at both ends of the pitch.

“We’ve worked a lot in preseason on our shape and that showed today,” Summerfield said. “The first goal was massive going into the second half, but the second goal was exactly what we needed. We rode a bit of pressure but to go 2-0 up in the latter stages of the game took a little bit of weight off our shoulders. We needed to dig deep defensively, and we proved how good we are defensively.”

Halifax travel to Stockport County on Tuesday with Summerfield hoping for a repeat performance to hopefully take three points once again.

“We need to go again,” Summerfield told Shaymen TV. “It was great to start with a win a get a clean sheet, but we need to recover right and do things properly. Tuesday is a big game, they all are, but if we keep working and prepare right then we should be ready.”
