Chesterfield: We’ve Met Before

We have a look back at some of the previous meetings between FC Halifax Town and Chesterfield.

13th October 2018- Halifax 1-1 Chesterfield National League

The corresponding fixture between the two sides earlier in the season took place at The Shay in October and was the first competitive meeting between the clubs since Halifaxโ€™s reformation. Matty Kosylo but Town ahead midway through the second half, but a familiar face came back to the haunt the Shaymen, as their former striker Tom Denton scored his first Spireites goal after joining the club from Alfreton, rescuing a point for his side in the 79th minute.

22nd October 2002- Chesterfield 2-0 Halifax LDV Vans Trophy

Despite no longer being in the Football League at the time, Town were still included in the LDV Vans Trophy, now known as the Checkatrade Trophy. Nevertheless, Town failed to gain a victory over Chesterfield, who were two leagues higher at the time, and exited the competition in the first round. This would prove to be the final meeting between the clubs until Townโ€™s reformation.

5th May 2001- Chesterfield 3-0 Halifax

Division Three

Prior to this season, the last league meeting between the clubs came on the final day of the 2000/01 season. at Saltergate. Chesterfield celebrated gaining promotion to the Second Division in style by putting three past Town, although Shaymen fans also wouldโ€™ve had reason to cheer, as they avoided relegation by two points thanks to Barnetโ€™s failure to win on the last day. The same fixture at The Shay earlier in the season finished 2-2, with Steve Thompson and Steve Kerrigan the Shaymen scorers.

14th February 1966- Halifax 4-1 Chesterfield Division Four

One of Townโ€™s best results against the Spireites came at The Shay in 1966. Two goals from Dennis Fidler, as well as strikes from Bill Atkins and Philip McCarthy gave Town the win in a season which saw them finish comfortably midtable in Division Four. This was one of four occasions in the 65/66 season that Town managed to score four goals in a game, Atkins and Fidler playing their parts with 19 and 13 goals respectively.

12th January 1934- Halifax 5-0 Chesterfield Division Three (North)

Townโ€™s biggest victory over Chesterfield came 85 years ago, in 1934, with a 5-0 drubbing at the Shay. Bill Chambers scored three of his 30 goals for the Shaymen that season against in this match, with Arthur Mercer and Fred Tunstall, who himself netted 20 for Town in that campaign, the other scorers for Alex Raisbeckโ€™s side. Tunstall also scored twice earlier that season in the away tie, although it was Chesterfield who came out victorious on that occasion, winning the game 4-2.
