FC Halifax Town midfielder Josh Staunton was delighted with his team’s response to last Thursday’s Boxing Day loss, after the Shayman beat Chesterfield in the Vanarama National League.
Town put in a dominant display against their rivals at The Shay, and Staunton was glad that Town were able to repay the faith shown by the fans, who turned out in number for this latest festive clash.
“After the run we’ve been playing and the run we have been on the win is a win. It is a step in the right direction,” Staunton told Shaymen TV after the match.
“It is a great response given what happened on Boxing Day. All we could do today was come out and put a performance in for the fans and the club, because there is no disputing we let them down on Boxing Day. It was important we came out today and tried to right some wrongs.”
Pete Wild changed formation, personnel and roles for this match, with Staunton given a more attacking role from midfield.
“We went to three at the back and I thought I could possibly make some runs from deep and it would get Cam [King] on the ball and be easier for him,” said Staunton. “It certainly helped him and got him some space, other than me just being very predictable and just sitting in I just wanted to mix it up a bit really.”
Stockport County are up next for Staunton and co on New Year’s Day, with the Shaymen wanting to put right the wrong of the result on Boxing Day.
“It was hard to get a good luck at them because we were so far off it, I think anyone would have beaten us that day,” Staunton said.
“I have a lot of shame in saying that. It is really hard to say they’ve done this and why they have done this because we were poor all over the pitch. We probably made them look ten times better than they were.
“I think we’ve just got to go into it with a clear head. We know what formation they are going to play and what personnel is going to be, so we are not going to be naive about it. We know their strengths, we’ve got to go into it with a clean slate and hopefully this new formation will put us in good stead and hopefully and add a few more goals to it.
