FC Halifax Town were defeated 3-2 away at Chesterfield with an injury time winner from Joe Quigley.

Town had come from two goals down and looked like they would be returning to West Yorkshire with a point at the league leaders with goals from Millenic Alli and a second half Luke Summerfield penalty, but they were undone by Joe Quigley at the start of injury time.

Both sides finished the game with ten men as Tom Naylor was shown a second yellow card during the second half and defender Adam Senior was shown a straight red for a challenge in midfield in a match which saw nine cards given and Chesterfield manager Paul Cook also sent to the stand.

Town boss Chris Millington made three changes with Jack Evans, Angelo Cappello and Aaron Cosgrave into the starting XI but the game couldn’t have started worse for the Shaymen as the Vanarama National League leaders took the lead within the first two minutes of the game, Liam Mandeville down the right-hand side and his ball into the box was tapped home by Will Grigg.

The Spireites had a good move down the left-hand side, Armando Dobra was fouled in the build-up and the referee waved play on as Chesterfield played the ball into the box and Jo Cummings headed out for a corner which was then cleared at the near post.

Tylor Golden’s cross was deflected out for the Shaymen’s first corner of the game, Jack Evans ball in was cleared for a second corner, Harry Tyrer was able to punch clear.

Town attacked down the left-hand side with Jack Evans and won a third corner of the game, Tylor Golden into the box and Mike Jones was able to clear inside the six-yard box.

Chesterfield doubled the lead on 23 minutes, a freekick into the box was met by the head of defender Tyrone Williams who headed past Sam Johnson.

They nearly made it three with the ball played into Armando Dobra however his shot was blocked, Town went up the other end and got a goal back through Millenic Alli to half the deficit for his second goal of the campaign.

A foul on Alli in his own half gave the Shaymen a free kick, Jamie Stott’s ball forward was cleared to Angelo Cappello at the edge of the box, but his effort was wide of the target.

The ball over the top for Millenic Alli saw him get into the penalty area, he took on Tyrone Williams and went down in the box. He looked at referee Aaron Jackson, but no penalty was awarded.

As the second half started the Shaymen started on the front foot forcing a couple of corners which Tyrer had to punch clear under pressure

A good run from Hunter after winning the ball in midfield, then Golden took over and his shot had to be saved by Tyrer as Town looked for an equaliser.

The Shaymen were briefly down to ten men as Aaron Cosgrave was injured in a challenge with Chesterfield goalkeeper Harry Tyrer, he required treatment but was able to come back on and was not carded despite the home bench and fans wanting it. However, his return was not for long as he was not able to continue and was replaced a couple of minutes later by Rob Harker just before the hour mark.

Mandeville tested Sam Johnson at full stretch to save for Chesterfield’s first corner of the second half and the home side thought they had a third goal. The ball was played short, the ball into the box was bundled home by Jamie Grimes, it was cleared off the line. The home players thought it was in, but no goal was given.

The Shaymen were handed a penalty on 68 minutes. Tylor Golden was brought down by Tom Naylor which gave substitute Luke Summerfield the chance from the spot, and he made no mistake for his first goal of the season.

In a game which saw nine cards given, home boss Paul Cook was shown a red card on the bench for his reaction to decisions on the pitch and he was followed shortly after by Tom Naylor who was shown a second yellow card with just under 15 minutes left. However, the referee levelled up the teams again with just under 5 minutes left, Adam Senior was shown a straight red for a foul in midfield.

Chesterfield won the game just after the 90th minute mark, Joe Quigley brushed off Jo Cummings challenge and he was one on one with Sam Johnson, and he made no mistake for the Spireites.

Oliver Banks nearly made it four, but Sam Johnson was able to turn the shot over the bar for a corner with an excellent save from the Town captain.

The Shaymen are back in action on Saturday when they travel to The Hive to take on Barnet, 3pm kick-off.
