FC Halifax Town fell to a narrow defeat at the Shay as fellow play-off contenders Carlisle United edged a tight contest thanks to Regan Linney’s second-half strike.
Adam Lakeland named an unchanged starting XI from Saturday’s impressive 3–0 victory at Solihull Moors, and Town began brightly in front of the home crowd.
The first opening of the evening fell Halifax’s way. Cody Johnson released Thierry Latty-Fairweather down the right, and his driven cross was met by Will Harris, but the touch carried just beyond Will Hugill arriving at the back post.
Carlisle’s first sight of goal came on 16 minutes when Linney’s delivery from the left was headed wide by Harvey MacAdam, failing to trouble Sam Johnson.
Despite Carlisle enjoying spells of possession, the clearer chances continued to fall to Town. Hmami won the ball high up the pitch, allowing Cody Johnson to test Gabriel Breeze, who held well. Moments later, Jay Turner-Cooke intercepted and fed Harris, whose low effort was again gathered by the visiting goalkeeper.
Town continued to probe. Warburton and Hugill combined neatly on the right, forcing Breeze to parry a dangerous cross before Carlisle scrambled clear. Another flowing move saw Hmami switch play to Warburton, whose cross was flicked on by Hugill, but Harris couldn’t quite stretch enough to turn it goalwards.
Carlisle threatened through Alex Gilliead, who dragged a 25-yard effort wide, before Sam Johnson was called into action to turn Luke Armstrong’s strike around the post.
Town emerged strongly after the break. Cody Johnson looked to burst into the box in a one-two with Harris, while Turner-Cooke and Warburton combined to win a corner that Carlisle eventually cleared.
A teasing cross from Will Smith had to be headed away by Jack Ellis with Latty-Fairweather lurking at the far post. Moments later, Town came agonisingly close to the opener. Warburton’s delivery from the right found Harris, whose header lacked the power to beat Breeze, allowing Carlisle to clear off the line.
Ryan Galvin entered the referee’s book for a foul on Hugill, and from the resulting pressure, Warburton picked out an unmarked Will Smith, who headed down but wide in front of the South Stand.
Carlisle struck on 68 minutes after a scrappy passage in midfield where several challenges went unpunished. Ellis broke forward and slipped in Linney, who finished low past Johnson to give the visitors the lead.
They almost doubled their advantage immediately, but Town responded well. Hmami forced a fingertip save from Breeze, and from the resulting corner, Turner-Cooke fired over after bringing the ball down inside the box.
Another corner caused panic in the Carlisle defence, but Breeze again held firm to deny Turner-Cooke.
As the game entered stoppage time, Carlisle looked to counter through Davies, only for Warburton to track back superbly and win a free-kick to halt the break.
Despite sustained pressure and a number of promising openings, Town were unable to find the equaliser their performance arguably deserved.
Attention now turns to Saturday’s home fixture against Scunthorpe United at the Shay, with kick-off at 3pm.
