With the start of the new season starting this weekend FC Halifax Town travel to National League returners Braintree Town. After spending one year in National League South Braintree were promoted via the play-offs. Here we look at the previous six meetings between the two sides. All matches between the two sides have taken place in the league at this level.

23/11/13 Braintree 1-0 FC Halifax

Neil Aspin was manager for The Shaymen first meeting between the two sides taking place at Cressing Road. Town would go onto lose the game due to a Kenny Davies penalty just after the hour mark giving The Iron three points.

In the run into the Conference Premier season the return fixture took place on a Thursday evening with both sides having play-off aspirations. The game finished as a goalless draw, which turned out to be an invaluable point for The Shaymen as they beat Braintree to the final play-off spot by three points. Town would go onto losing to eventual play-off champions Cambridge United 2-1.

With both sides carrying genuine hopes for finishing in the play-offs after the previous seasons performances. Wanting to avoid defeat it was a cagey affair down in Braintree. Much like the current England side Aspin set The Shaymen with a back three perhaps a certain Mr. Southgate was an admirer?

21/02/15 FC Halifax 1-0 Braintree

The Shaymen to this date got their one and only victory over Braintree thanks to a 90th minute winner from striker Jamie Jackson. This would be only one of a disappointing five goals for the striker over the season he was at The Shay.

14/11/15 FC Halifax 3-6 Braintree

With the two teams so evenly matched from previous results nobody could’ve predicted what happened. Within the first five minutes it was one goal each, at the half an hour mark Town were down four goals to one, Michael Cheek had netted two and Kenny Davies scored from the spot. Shaun Tuton pulled two back to give The Shaymen a chance of getting into the game in the second half. But less than five minutes gone in the second half Cheek completed his hat-trick then just under 10 minutes later Sammie Szmodics got the sixth and put the game well out of reached for Town. This would be Darren Kelly’s last game in charge of the club he left with Thee Shaymen rock bottom if the league.

Now with Jim Harvey making the decisions The Shaymen went about avenging their previous defeat against The Iron. With a cup run ending in The Shaymen winning the FA Trophy, fans were optimistic they could achieve the great escape and survive relegation. This was not to be, familiar face to The Shaymen Kenny Davies got The Iron running with barely a minute gone and Michael Cheek added one to go along with his hat-trick earlier in the season. Town went on to be relegated from the division. Braintree finished third and lost 2-1 to eventual play-off champions Grimsby Town over two legs.
