Boston United: Can’t Use Weather As An Excuse

After the 2-1 defeat to Boston United yesterday, the official website caught up with FC Halifax Town’s goal scorer, Dayle Southwell, to ask him his thoughts on the match.

“To be honest, I don’t think we were good enough. In the first half we were poor, and they dominated the game. In the second half we wanted to come out the traps quickly and they seemed to get on top again. So overall, it wasn’t what we’d have liked from the last pre-season game. We picked up towards the end and hopefully we can turn that around next week”.

Anyone who was at the MBi Shay Stadium would have experienced the freakish downpour of rain during the first half; nobody more so than the players who were out on the pitch. We asked Dayle if the playing conditions majorly affected the team:

“It’s the same for both teams and it’s hard to get the ball down and play when it’s thundering down like that. So yeah, it played a bit of a part, but we can’t use that as an excuse”.

After trailing 2-0 at halftime, Town responded well in the second half as they moved into another gear and began to turn the screw. They couldn’t quite find an equaliser but Dayle did manage to get one back for the home side. He talked us through his goal:

“Trialist #4 did really well in the box as he managed to Cruyff turn it. The other players didn’t see it coming and he stood the ball up to the back post. Luckily I was there to get on the end of it and head it home”.

Yesterday’s match was the final game of pre-season. It’s been a rollercoaster ride for this new-look FC Halifax Town side, so the official website asked Dayle to sum up pre-season for us:

“I think pre-season has gone ok. We’re a relatively new side gelling together so it’s took time for everyone to come together. We’ve had a couple of niggles here and there, so it’s been hard to get our full team settled, but hopefully come 4th August we’ll be firing and ready to go. We’re really looking forward to it”.
