Following FC Halifax Town’s penalty win over Alfreton Town in the FA Trophy, manager Pete Wild spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game.

“It’s been a long week,” Wild said. “We trained Thursday and Friday, but the lads looked visibly tired. They have put a lot into this week. I knew today was going to be a stretch to try and get a performance out of them. At times we have looked off the pace, but we have put so much into this week, to get a win whichever way we could would be a good win for us. Yet again we have found a different way to win.”

Kian Spence opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after he followed up on Billy Waters strike that was well saved.

“We had worked on that move,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “We had worked on trying to suck their fullbacks out and play down the sides of them. That was probably the only opportunity in the first half we had to do that and it was a really well worked goal.”

With the scores level and the game nearing its conclusion, it seemed inevitable that Town would be featuring in another penalty shootout.

“The second half was a non-entity,” Wild said. “Neither side created much in the second half. It just had the look of going to pens and you could probably tell, 20 minutes before the end that it was going to pens. I’d certainly back Sam in pens. Sam is excellent in the shootouts so I always back him to do well. It wasn’t the greatest set of penalties, from both sides. But despite that, we’ve found a way. That’s what people are saying about us, we are just finding a way to win. So credit to us for finding three different ways to win this week.”

Town return to league action next Saturday as we travel south to Maidenhead United as we look to hold onto top spot.

“A bit of time off now,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “A bit of time to relax. We’ve got some tired, aching bodies in there. They need some down to now and then we’ll build back up to next weekend. Again it is a really big week for us next week with Maidenhead, Boreham Wood, and then the trip to Dagenham & Redbridge.”
