Neil Aspin hailed his FC Halifax Town side’s 2-0 victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Alfreton as ‘massive’ – a result which leaves the Shaymen in fifth place in the Skrill Premier table.

A happy Aspin reflected to Shaymen Player after Town’s fourth win on the bounce:

“It’s a massive win. Coming into this week we knew that we had two very hard games.

“Obviously the first one was tonight against an Alfreton team who are in really good form themselves and who work exceptionally hard.

“I’ve seen them play on a number of occasions and they are a difficult team to play against, so I am obviously delighted to get the result.”

Town bossed the game for long spells and grabbed a goal in each half – both courtesy of top goalscorer Lee Gregory – to seal the win against an underwhelming Alfreton side, who rarely threatened until the latter.

Aspin was pleased with his side’s showing as they held out for their third clean sheet in four games. He revealed:

“For the first 30 minutes I thought we were really good. I thought that we were the first to every ball and we started off really well.

“For the next 15 minutes Alfreton came more into the game and you know that they are going to have a spell. I think it would have been difficult to maintain the tempo of the first 30 minutes.

“The second goal was crucial but it wasn’t until the back end of the game that we were troubled when our goalkeeper has pulled off a couple of great saves and our defence have got blocks in. They did the job they needed to do to get a clean sheet.”

Whilst Town are looking sturdy at the back, they have a star man upfront who is in blistering red-hot form. Gregory’s two clinical goals against Alfreton propels him back to joint-top of the scorer’s chart in the league, and 28 goals in all competitions. He is a man that can’t be kept out of the headlines, as Aspin explained:

“You can’t keep him out of the news at the moment. His goalscoring record is tremendous. The team believe in him and they know that if they can produce the chances and do their job then they’ve got a match-winner out there with Lee; he is proving that game after game.

!I can’t speak more highly of him. But it was a team performance tonight. He obviously put the finishing touch to it but a lot of lads there worked exceptionally hard to get us the result.

“The first goal is a very difficult chance. He’s made it, he’s dragged it back and he’s bent it into the corner.

“He opens up his body a lot and he goes for that; he does practice that in the little time that we have available to train. He has worked really hard at his finishing.

“The second one is just a really good striker’s goal. He’s in the right place but it’s a great ball by Marshy.

“It’s a lovely ball, left-footed, curling away and right in the danger area. Any striker watching would like that goal; it’s a really good strike.”
