York City: Report

FC Halifax Town are through to the second round of the FA Youth Cup after a dramatic fight back at the Mbi Shay Stadium against York City.

Jake Thompson fired home the games winning penalty after an excellent save from Kyle Trenerry gave the youngster his opportunity.

Halifax were two goals down when the board went up for added time, but after last-gasp goals from Jack Johnson and Josh Debanham the game was sent extra-time and penalties.

Halifax Town will now be in the hat for the second-round draw later in the week.

The gameโ€™s first chance fell to Walton of York City. A cross from the far side fell to the number four on the penalty spot and despite beating the keeper with his effort on the turn, he could only rattle the bar.

From that moment on Halifax grew into the first half. Marko Basic and James Sunderland caused problems for the visitors on the break but failed to find that final ball.

Eventually, Town were punished for their failure to make their pressure count.

York turned defence into attack in an admirable counter attack that saw Brutton fire in the opening goal from range. Kyle Trenerry in the Shaymen goal had no chance. York had the lead.

The Shaymen pushed hard for an equaliser as the first-half came to a close and almost found it in added-time.

Kelan Swales curled a cross to Josh Debenham who improvised superbly to send the York defenders the wrong way with a back-heel. However, his flick was just behind Sunderland, who was waiting for a tap-in.

After the break the away side were able to double their advantage. Yorkโ€™s Lawrence sent a 25-yard free-kick flying over the wall and into the far top corner. Again, Trenerry had no chance and Halifax now had a mountain to climb.

From that points on the game lost its flow. Sunderland tested Joe Wilton in the York City net from range on a number of occasions but never looked like beating him.

Jack Johnsonโ€™s last minute strike, at the time, looked like merely a consolation when it rippled the net with nobody in the Mbi Shay Stadium able to predict what would follow.

With added-time over three-minutes old, the Young Shaymen found that unlikely equaliser. Debenham leaped high and powered his header into the back of the net to send the game to extra-time and penalties.

With the shootout tied at 3-3, Trenerry pulled off an strong save to give Thompson the opportunity to send the Young Shaymen into the next round, an opportunity he grasped. His penalty had beaten the keeper before it even left his foot.
