Welling: Be Positive In Every Game

The last time FC Halifax Town secured successive away league wins was last March in the Conference North after prevailing over Colwyn Bay and Workington.

Fast forward twelve months and the Shaymen have secured just a further seven victories on their travels in all competitions (Boston United, Guiseley, Brackley Town, Nuneaton Town, Harrogate Railway, Dartford and Hyde).

Nevertheless, as Town visit the London borough of Bexley with a back-to-back away win in the offering it also represents an opportunity to continue their assault for a play-off place yet Neil Aspin remains philosophical:

โ€œI just think that we’re in a position where we didn’t expect to be. Although people get carried away our aim has always been to stay in this league and establish ourselves. You aim to get 50 points because you think that is the number that will keep you up. In the end, you might need more than 50 points but it is a good marker to get to but now we need to continue to push on and be positive in every game and see how many points we can get.

โ€œSo at the moment we’ll be going to Welling confident even though it is a difficult place to go but with our away form, every place is difficult. But we certainly won’t be sitting back we must go forward we must create chances and we must try and win the game.โ€

Just like FC Halifax Welling United gained promotion to the fifth-tier of English football after clinching the Conference South title over fellow Skrill Premier side Salisbury City who defeated Dover Athletic in the play-off final.

Whilst all three teams sit in the top half of the table having acclimatised impressively to the rigours of this division. Halifax have conceded the most goals out of the trio with Aspin calling for a tighter rearguard from now till the end of the campaign:

โ€œIt didn’t cost us today but in another game it could prove to be very costly (speaking about Hyde’s solitary goal) it could have given them a way back into the game. It was very sloppy and it does disappoint me but having said that even though we have conceded too many goals this season the goal tally in the plus column is tremendous. Getting five against Hyde was a great achievement so I am not taking any negatives from that game.โ€

Having successfully navigated their way past Hyde on a cumbersome pitch a similar playing surface awaits the Halifax players this Saturday thanks to a combination of bad weather and a ground-share with Isthmian League Division One North outfit Erith & Belvedere. Yet the Wings enter the clash having grabbed 13 points from a possible 18 and are buoyed from an excellent 2-1 midweek away triumph over Lincoln City. With Aspin keen to prolong their away day joy:

โ€œFull credit to the supporters who came for the game against Hyde. The way we have been away from home, there was no way that today would have been a given three points. They backed us so it was nice to get some fans behind the goal and I appreciate they turned out again away from home.โ€
