After 46 games the national league has finally drawn to a close. The playoffs and relegation places were already decided but today would decide the final resting places for all 24 clubs. I will be having a quick run through all 12 of the matches played today on the final day of the national league season 2018/19. Starting with our boys away at playoff guaranteed Fylde.
AFC Fylde 0 FC Halifax Town 2
The Shaymen have only lost once against a top 6 team all season and today changed nothing. Fylde fans who were hoping for a good result going into the playoffs were forced to wait to find out who they would be playing when after 38 minutes Matty Brown got his head onto a corner at the back post and his header looped over the keeper and in at the far post. Then only three minutes later some brilliant work down the right by Rodney saw his cross into the area turned into the Fylde goal by their own man Birch. 2-0 would be how the game ended, a brilliant result once again for Halifax where as Fylde would have hoped for better as they look for a route to Wembley.
Boreham Wood 3 Eastleigh 3
Eastleigh were another team who were forced to wait to find out their playoff opponents after being involved in a six-goal thriller. Eastleigh took the lead after half an hour thanks to Dennett, but saw their lead taken away only nine minutes later by Boreham Wood’s Gabriel. Just after half time a double blow from Eastleigh only 6 minutes after the restart must have made them think that 6th place was theirs but only seven minutes after Eastleigh’s 3rd Ash brought one back for Wood and 19 minutes later they equalised though Murtagh. 3-3 draw in a highly entertaining match.
Bromley 5 Ebbsfleet United 1
Another six-goal match but less of a thriller and more of a romp for Bromley over Ebbsfleet. After 21 minutes Bromley took the lead thanks to Porter and amazingly this was the only goal in the first half. But then in 13 minutes of madness four goals would be exchanged between the two sides. Sutherland with a second for Bromley through a penalty, five minutes later Brindley added a third for Bromley. Ebbsfleet might have thought a comeback was on when Drury got one back after 62 minutes. But these thoughts were put to bed only two minutes later when Hooper added a fourth for Bromley. The nail in the coffin came in added time when Coulson added a fifth for Bromley. Final score 5-1.
Dagenham & Redbridge 1 Solihull Moors 1
All the action in this game came ten minutes after the break. Dag & Red took the lead only moments after the restart courtesy of Wilkinson. But nine minutes later Hylton drew level for Solihull who took a point and as a result second position.
Dover Athletic 3 Sutton United 0
Since guaranteeing safety Dover have been one of the stand out teams coming into the game on the back of 3 consecutive wins. They got their fourth win in a row today after brushing aside tenth place Sutton United three goals to nil thanks to an early goal from Lewis and two late goals coming from Effiong and Passley respectively.
Gateshead 0 Barrow 2
Gateshead’s poor form was extended today after a professional performance from Barrow and two goals from Rooney were enough to take all three points for Barrow. A late Red card for Gateshead to White was enough to all but confirm the result.
Hartlepool United 3 Salford City 2
Salford failed to hold onto 2nd position after a second half rally from Hartlepool which saw them score three was enough to end the season on a high from the North East side. Salford had the perfect start by scoring after only three minutes. But a Red card for Salford’s Green just before half time would signal a change to the tie. Featherstone equalised for Hartlepool five minutes after the restart. In the 69th minute they took the lead via Kambamba and then doubled their advantage thanks to James only 6 minutes after that. Dieseruvwe added a constellation goal but it would make no difference. Final score 3-2.
Havant & Waterlooville 0 Barnet 2
Two second half goals were enough for Barnet to upset already relegated Havant & Waterlooville. Alexander scored soon after the re-start and Barham after 70. That was all Barnet needed who ended the season in 13th position.
Leyton Orient 0 Braintree Town 0
In the only goalless draw of the day, a Champion was crowned. Leyton Orient only need to nil their opponents and that’s exactly what they did. No match talking points, but Leyton Orient are playing league football next season.
Maidenhead United 2 Chesterfield 0
It took to the 70th minute for anything to happen in this game but when lightning struck once it struck twice. A goal from Obileye in the 70th was complemented by Clifton who scored again for Maidenhead only seven minutes later. They may have finished 19th but Maidenhead ended their season on a high.
Maidstone United 0 Aldershot Town 2
Maidstone finished last and couldn’t make themselves feel any better after also relegated Aldershot got the better of them through two goals from McClure and Mensah. Both teams relegated and not much action. 0-2 to Aldershot who will be playing conference south next season.
Wrexham 2 Harrogate Town 1
Wrexham were the only top six side to get a win today after beating fellow playoff contenders Harrogate 2-1. Beck gave Harrogate the lead after only 11 minutes. But then in a huge blow before halftime Oswell equalised for Wrexham. As the clock ticked down it looked as though the points would be shared and that the two teams would be playing each other again in the playoffs, but ten minutes from time Deverdics scored the winner for Wrexham who will now face Eastleigh in the first play off round.
