FC Halifax Town take on Sutton United in The National League on Saturday afternoon at The Shay. Here’s a look at the previous clashes between the two sides…
The Shaymen and The U’s have only faced off against each other three times in their respective histories. However, their three meetings have always produced goals…
The sides first met at Sutton’s Gander Green Lane in November 2017 in a goal frenzy which saw Sutton prevail as 3-2 victors. The home side opened the scoring on the stroke of half time courtesy of Ross Lafayette. Sutton doubled their advantage in the 58th minute when Craig Dundas scored. Tom Denton halved the deficit for The Shaymen six minutes later, however Sutton regained their two goal lead in the 73rd minute as Lafayette grabbed his brace. Scott Garner made it an interesting ending to the game as he made it 3-2 with five minutes left, but The U’s were able to hold on for the three points.
In the reverse fixture in West Yorkshire in April 2018, The Shaymen were able to avenge their defeat against Sutton as they ran out 2-1 winners at The Shay. Mike Fondop-Talum gave Halifax the lead in the 18th minute, a lead which was held until the 82nd minute when Ross Lafayette made it three goals in two games for Sutton against The Shaymen. However, there was to be late drama as in the 89th minute, Halifax’s Ben Tomlinson popped up with a late header to give the hosts a last gasp win.
The sides’ first meeting this season came at Gander Green Lane on Matchday 8 where they played out a 1-1 draw. It took until the 55th minute for the deadlock to be broken when Kenny Davis struck for Sutton with a free kick. However, their lead was short lived as Dayle Southwell equalised seven minutes later. Neither side was able to find a winner which meant a share of the spoils in Sutton.
