FC Halifax Town were defeated 2-1 by Stockport County yesterday in their first pre-season game. The official website caught up with Town goal scorer, Niall Maher, to ask him his thoughts on the match.

When asked about the performance of the team in their opening pre-season game, Niall said:

“It was a game of two halves. We know as a squad it wasn’t good enough in the first half. Second half, we tried to rectify what we did wrong but there’s plenty to work to doย and plenty to improve on.”

The Shaymen fell behind to two goals in the first half but Maher got one back in the dying moments. He wasย modest when we asked himย to describe his goal:

“It was just a header. Any chance you get at a set piece is an opportunity to score. I was just there at the right time to nod it in.”

We then askedย Niallย if today’s result would affect team morale and if his goal would give them confidence moving forward.

“The result we’re not really that concerned about, it’s more about development and how we play as a team.”

It seems that although defeat is never a good thing, the team isn’t too worried moving forward, and going into the next game against Brighouse Town on Tuesday night, Niall seemed confident that things would only get better.

“We only showed little bits today of what we’ve done over the last two weeks. There’s still four weeks to go until the start of the season and everyday we’re going to get better and better.”
