Matty Brown returned to action last night in a 0-0 draw at Solihull, we caught up with the Town captain for his thoughts.
0-0 draw here at Solihull what is your assessment of that?
It was a tough game, first minute of the game we’ve conceded two corners and had to two goal clearances straight away we were under the cosh. But that set us up and we knew what was coming for all the game and I think we stood up to that. They had aerial bombardment they had pace and power upfront we knew to expect that, and I think we handled it quite well. And kept their chances to a minimum and after recent results and recent performances that showed a lot of character in the dressing room. Obviously, people are quick to criticise us at the minute, but we’ve always said we’ve got it in there just about getting it out onto the pitch and I think tonight the lads have got to be given credit because we’ve dug deep and it’s a tough place to come and at least we deserved a draw. We had chances in the game yeah granted they had chances too, but on overall play begrudges the draw.
Conceded a penalty in the first half, what were your feelings on that?
It was one of them you know where I’ve won the header first and its dropped and they’ve flicked it round the back and the runner has got onto it and Wrighty has cut back and is about to shoot I’ve got to make the tackle regardless, I’ve got the ball but I’ve followed through and I knew he was going to give the penalty. But it was one of them make the tackle or give them a free shot on goal, and thankfully it gone over. I think that’s the second one penalty in two seasons at this ground and they’ve missed both. After the bad luck I’ve had recently I’ll take the good luck, when things like that happen you’ve got to ride your luck and sometimes it’s your night penalties go over the bar gives us a lift we dug in and I thought we were solid. Out of possession we were solid, compact and limited them to chances. We created chances which has been few and far between last few weeks so definitely platform for us to build on and be like our normal selves.
You’ve returned after a few weeks out, how does it feel to back out there?
Brilliant, I try and do my best for the lads when I was out within the dressing room, but everyone knows it’s not the same as being out on the pitch I’ve being dying to get back out there. Been a little bit precautionary with them holding me back but nice it was good to get back out there and dust of the cobwebs. I’ll be the first one to say performance was a little bit rusty tonight, obviously brought a presence and things but personally it’s great to be back out there with the lads and we’ve got a good squad in there to push on the table and get a few points and hopefully got to Havant on Saturday and get something. I know they’ve had a good result tonight, but we’ve got to be confident now and get three points.
Like you said its Havant & Waterlooville this Saturday who’ve just won 7-0. What sort of preparations will you be doing before that game?
Same as we do for every team we prepare properly. Monday to Friday the managers attention to detail is spot on and we know strengths and weaknesses of every team we play against regardless of who we play. We’ll be fully aware of what’s coming up Saturday, what challenges, what threats and areas where we can hurt them. We recover from this game focus on Saturday and I’m sure we’ll go there with a good game plan.
