It’s a short turnaround for The Shaymen as they face off against Harrogate Town for the second time in the space of six days. Ahead of the game against Harrogate Town in The National League on New Year’s Day, here’s a look at some of the previous clashes between the two sides…
There was late drama at Wetherby Road on Boxing Day as The Shaymen beat Harrogate 1-2.
Harrogate opened the scoring eight minutes before the break thanks to a goal from defender Callum Howe. However, soon after the restart Halifax scored an equaliser as Nathan Clarke rose above all from a corner to bring the game level. The game was swaying towards a draw, but in the 88th minute there was time for a third goal of the game as Dayle Southwell slotted the ball home to give Halifax a big, festive three points!
The sides met three times during the 2016-17 season in The National League North. The first meeting that season came at The Shay in August 2016. Harrogate were able to grab the win on this occasion as Jack Emmett’s goal in the 65th minute separated the two sides.
The Shaymen and Harrogate also met in FA Cup 4th Round Qualifying in October 2016, a game in which Halifax also won as they triumphed in a 2-0 victory. Halifax broke the deadlock midway through the second half as Jordan Sinnott slotted the ball home in the 69th minute. Qualification to the First Round Proper was secured in injury time as Jake Hibbs doubled Halifax’s lead in the fifth minute of additional time!
In the league reverse fixture at Harrogate’s Wetherby Road came in April 2017 at Harrogate’s Wetherby Road where The Shaymen were able to come out 3-0 winners. Dion Charles opened the scoring for Town after 10 minutes. Their lead was doubled 18 minutes later when Matty Kosylo got on the scoresheet. Town had to wait until the closing stages of the game for their third goal, however it did arrive in the 78th minute as Kosylo grabbed his brace.
The sides’ National League North meetings in 2012-13 came in a short space of time of one another as the poor weather caused havoc with the pitch at The Shay, meaning the two games came within weeks of each other. The first game came at The Shay in March 2013, where The Shaymen were narrowly defeated by Harrogate 2-1. All the game’s goals came in the first 13 minutes of the game, with the visitors taking the lead after just five minutes with Matt Bloomer’s goal. Harrogate soon doubled their advantage as Paul Bolland bagged just six minutes later. Halifax halved the deficit in the 13th minute as Dan Gardner equalised, but a 2-1 scoreline was enough to give Harrogate the three points.
As aforementioned, it was a quick turnaround for the reverse fixture at Wetherby Road, as the game took place in April 2013. On this occasion, the points were shared in West Yorkshire. Harrogate scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute through Adam Bolder. The hosts held their lead until the 64th minute of the game when James Bolton equalised for The Shaymen.
