After making it four wins from the opening five matches, the official website caught up with assistant manager Phil Hughes to ask him his thoughts on the 2-1 win against Dagenham & Redbridge.
“It was important today that we got back to winning ways. The manager put a lot of leg work and preparation in for this game. We had a clear game plan and I think we started the game well. The first 20 minutes, we dominated. If we’d got that early goal, we looked like we could have been comfortable winners, but they held on and made the next 20 minutes difficult for us. We took the lead and that set us up well for the rest of the game”.
After going in level at halftime, Phil spoke about how Town managed to secure all three points in the second half.
“I thought it was important in the second half for us to stamp our authority on the game, but as it happened, it was an equal affair. Then once we got the second goal, it was a matter of us seeing the game out. It was a good performance overall and I think 2-1 was a fair result and well deserved”.
As a former Northern Ireland international goalkeeper, Phil said he was impressed with both men between the posts.
“Their keeper managed to get a hand on Matty’s shot and he had a good game making numerous saves. We had a lot of shots on target and in fact he made some fantastic saves. All credit to Kosylo though for getting us up and running with a good goal”.
“In fairness to Sam, he wasn’t overly busy, but he had a free kick to deal with in the top left-hand corner. It was a very, very good save and then later he was able to make another very, very good save late in the second half”.
Phil was also very impressed with the performances of Ben Tomlinson so far this season as he was involved in the goal that saw The Shaymen clinch the victory.
“Ben Tomlinson has been on fire. His set plays have been very, very good. Again, all credit to the manager as it was something he has worked on. Nathan made a fantastic header and Jonathan was alive in the box and managed to help it on its way”.
FC Halifax Town now sit second in the Vanarama National League and they will take on Boreham Wood this coming Saturday. You can watch the full interview with assistant manager Phil Hughes right now on Shaymen TV.
