Another game, another victory for the Shaymen as they travelled to the Proact Stadium on Tuesday night and came away with all three points in a vital 3-2 victory over Chesterfield, which has sent us to the top of the league!
The Shaymen started the brighter out of the two sides, hogging the ball inside Chesterfield’s half. Michael Duckworth released an effort around 30 yards out, which was convincingly wide, but the first effort of the game.
Well, the next chance was made secure. A dangerous attack on eight minutes from FC Halifax Town seen Cameron King running at the Chesterfield defence. Chesterfield centre-back Anthony Gerrard was running backwards facing King, he missed the run of Jamie Allen out wide, who King found with a perfectly weighted pass. Allen easily placed the ball past Luke Coddington to put the Shaymen into the lead with his first goal for the club.
Chesterfield’s first chance of the game came around 18 minutes into the game. The Shaymen had been dominating the ball and a chance came for Chesterfield, as a cross into the box found the head of former Shayman Scott Boden. He caught sweet connection, but his aim was inches wide of the goal.
Midway through the first-half, Tobi Sho-Silva was ever so close to making it two. A wonderful ball over the top by Nolan sent Tobi through on goal, the keeper was fast out the blocks to get into his face, and Sho-Silva’s shot resulted in a save from Coddington and a corner to the Shaymen.
This time it should’ve been two and it just wouldn’t go in for Tobi. McAlinden had the ball on the edge, tried slipping through C.King, the ball passed back to Sho-Silva, who released a powerful side-footed attempt which cannoned off the crossbar.
The Shaymen were still pushing from this attack and a minute later, they got what they deserved and made it 2-0 on the 33rd minute. A ball crossed in found the head of Nathan Clarke who placed his header into the bottom corner taking a slight deflection off Jermaine McGlashan to help the ball in!
Chesterfield were inches from pulling one back in added time before the break, as Anthony Gerrard’s header was cleared off the line by either Clarke and Nolan, they were both there to stop the ball from crossing the line, which meant the Shaymen headed into the break with a two-goal lead.
Second half whistle was blown and the Shaymen seemed hungry for more and they straight away got what they wanted, a third goal. One man we can thank and one man only for this goal and that’s Cameron King, he twisted and turned the Chesterfield defence inside and out, until he could find a strike on goal and did he find it? You bet! Coddington couldn’t do enough to deny King’s strike and the Shaymen were running ragged!
We were only five minutes into the second half and Chesterfield brought one back. We had two goals inside the first five minutes of the second half to continue this action-packed game. A ball into the box found the head of former Shayman Mike Fondop, whose header flew past Johnson to bring the lead back down to two.
A huge chance came for Chesterfield with five minutes left as Liam Mandeville was found 12-yards out, his attempt was brilliantly saved by Johnson to make sure the two-goal lead stayed intact.
Chesterfield did find the net on the 88th minute though, as Joe Rowley’s low drive inside the area flew past Johnson to bring our lead down to one.
The Shaymen were just too good for Chesterfield in the end as they held onto victory. Even better news, after the 3-2 result, we have risen to top of the league after nine games!
