After an exciting match against Braintree Town yesterday, FC Halifax Town’s opening goal scorer, Jonathan Edwards, spoke to the official website to give us his thoughts on the team’s win.

“I thought it was a good away performance. We were up against it in the first half for a bit but we managed to ride that and go 1-0 up. Then Nathan Clarke got the second goal and we just seemed to cruise after that”.

After a scrappy opening stanza, the Shaymen went on to dominate the game and put the Braintree defence under immense pressure. Jonathan spoke about the build up to his goal and then talked us through his header.

“There were three or four corners in a row and I thought one of them had to go in. Luckily it was me on that fourth corner. I got across my man and luckily it hit the post and went in”.

Edwards scored in the 42nd minute; just before halftime. We asked Jonathan if the timing of his goal was just as important as the goal itself.

“I think any goal before halftime is crucial because no matter how the game is going in the first half, you’re mentally already up if you’re going in at 1-0”.

Despite already having the lead, the Shaymen did not rest on their laurels as they continued to attack and pile the pressure on Braintree in the second half. Jonathan gave us a brief roundup of what manager Jamie Fullarton said to his men at halftime.

“He said it was a good away performance…so far. Throughout the first half when they were on top, we got through that and got the goals we needed”.

As we mentioned, FC Halifax Town went on to win the match 2-0. It was a great result and a great performance on the opening day of the Vanarama National League season. You can watch the full interview with Jonathan right now on Shaymen TV.
