FC Halifax Town’s playoff campaign came to an abrupt end as they fell 2-1 away at Boreham Wood. Second half goals from Kane Smith and Matt Rhead cancelled out Tobi Sho-Silva’s first half strike.
The Shaymen started the game the better side and were deserved leaders heading into the break after Sho-Silva beat Grant Smith in the 18th minute.
After a nervy opening 15 minutes, Town won the first corner of the game. Charlie Cooper played a low cross to the edge of the box where he found Cameron King, but he could not keep his shot down as it went over the bar.
Shortly after, Boreham Wood got a corner of their own. Another low cross sent to the edge of the box caused confusion amongst the Town defence as one shot was blocked by three defenders and the follow up shot was cleared off the line.
On the 18th minute Town took the lead. A long drop-kick from Sam Johnson went all the way to Boreham Wood defence. The centre back missed the header and Sho-Silva nicked in front to put it past goalkeeper G Smith.
With just a few minutes left before the break, King was brought down by Keiran Murtagh on the edge of the box, with Murtagh getting the first yellow of the game. Michael Duckworth stepped up to shoot and hit a low shot on target. G Smith spilled the initial shot but gathered the ball at the second attempt.
Into injury time and Town had another excellent chance to double their lead. Sho-Silva with the ball on the edge of the box made a superb turn and nearly found the top corner, but Smith managed to tip it on to the bar as it went out for a corner. The resulting corner found Nathan Clarke at the back post, but his header went well wide of the target.
Just eight minutes into the second half and Boreham Wood levelled the score. The ball fell to Kane Smith on the edge of the box who hit a low shot. It took a big deflection off Clarke to find the back of the net.
With just 10 minutes left Boreham Wood took the lead thanks to a Matt Rhead header. Following a short corner that was put behind by substitute Jack Earing, Boreham Wood put another corner into the box which was met at the near post by Rhead to make it 2-1.
Despite late pressure, Town were unable to pull level and take it to penalties as Boreham Wood kept every man behind the ball. Boreham Wood will face Harrogate Town now on the 25th of July as the Shaymen look ahead to next season in the Vanarama National League.
