FC Halifax Town Captain Matty Brown comments on ‘real maturity’ in the squad after the Shaymen ran out as 2-1 victors against Barrow AFC.

Early on Halifax found themselves on the back-foot, following an early strike from former Port Vale midfielder Lewis Hardcastle.

“It was a shocking start from us… we were over-emphasising early doors saying we can’t start poorly.

“I thought in the (pre-match) warm-up we were a bit off it to be honest…even though it felt like a slap in the face, it spurred us into life, we did well to get in at 1-0 down at half time, I think the first half they had the better of the play.”

The West Yorkshire side remained a goal down at half time, which prompted gaffer Pete Wild to make a tactical decision and to put on Jeff King in place of Cameron King.

“We tweaked it a bit at half time and said a few things and I think second half you’ve seen real maturity for a young group – taking instructions on board and delivering on the pitch.

“Second half I thought it was a very professional performance, we didn’t play our best football today, but it was very composed and a ‘savvy’ performance – you use your experience and get into areas to stop them playing.”

An early second half goal from Liam Nolan leveled the score, before Liam McAlinden pushed Halifax into the lead from the spot, scoring his third goal for the club since joining at the start of the season.

“We’ve got a great team spirit in there, and everything that is critical is done in the right way and the lads know it’s not personal… we’re riding the wave at the minute so we’ll enjoy whilst we can.”

Despite some late pressure from the hosts, more than 200 Shaymen fans made the trip to Barrow to see their side go unbeaten in three games.

“At the moment everything is going really well, but we’ve got to maintain a grounded approach and we’ll enjoy the good times like today and two wins on the bounce can move you up in this league.

“We’ve got a young squad and it’s important we keep the players grounded and expect that we are going to have off days and make sure we don’t get too down when they come.”
