This Saturday FC Halifax Town host Aldershot Town in the Vanarama National League. The Shots currently find themselves in 22nd place five points from safety. The game is extremely important for both sides and is a real six pointer in the fight to avoid relegation. Here we’ll look at the player The Shaymen need to look out for.
Striker Bernard Mensah. Manager Gary Waddock brought the striker into the club in the recent January transfer window, from League One club Bristol Rovers. Mensah currently holds an unwanted record at the Shots, in the five games Aldershot have played in 2019 Mensah is the only player to have scored, he has two goals to his name in three appearances since joining the club.
Mensah made an immediate impact as the striker scored to secure a point in a 1-1 draw away at Dagenham & Redbridge. And his second was in a 3-1 home defeat to play-off chasing Eastleigh. This is Mensah’s second spell with the club having played 64 games scoring 17 times between 2016-2018.
Mensah started his career with current Premier League club Watford. In his three years at The Hornets he had loan spells Barnet who were playing in League Two at the time and Braintree Town. But back at Watford Mensah only made two first team appearances before he was moved on.
Mensah played an important part in Aldershot’s race for promotion back to the football league. In 2016/17 they lost 5-2 on aggregate to Tranmere Rovers in the play-off semi-final. The next season in the new play-off format The Shots lost 5-4 on penalties to Ebbsfleet United.
The Shots will be hoping with the return of Mensah to the club they’ll be able to put a run of victories together to get themselves out of trouble.
The game takes place Saturday the 16th February at The Shay for a 3pm kick off. If you’re unable to get down to support The Shaymen you can listen to live commentary from The Shay on Shaymen Audio from 2:45pm.
