FC Halifax Town became one of three teams to beat an away Wrexham today, in a slightly delayed 3:15 kick off. Halifax were 16th place going into this game whilst Wrexham were top of the league, having reached the 100 points mark.
Wrexham started fast, winning a corner two minutes in. Elliot Lee’s corner was cleared easily by Town.
Wrexham won their second corner a few minutes later; Elliot Lee’s cross nearly found an Wrexham man, but was cleared away by Town’s defence again.
Town found themselves on the counter in the 11th minute, winning a foul and a free kick on the right of the box. Gilmour crossed in a short ball that found Tyler Golden outside the box, who had a decent low driven shot on target, but it was cleared by the visitors.
Elliot Lee took a third corner, but his curling ball in was caught well by Sam Johnson.
Lee was soon after given a yellow card in the 17th minute after a foul on Jamie Cooke giving Town another free kick. Gilmour crossed in a decent left footed ball from the right side of the box, but it was again cleared by the Wrexham defence.
In the 19th minute there was a nice moment with both sets of fans were up on their feet, cheering for a minute in memory of 19-year-old Town fan Noah, who sadly passed away last year.
Wrexham managed to find themselves on the counter, but Jacob Mendy’s left footed cross was high over the Town goal. Moments later they again found themselves on the attack, however their right footed shot from range was well over the bar.
Town had their best opportunity of the game just before the half hour mark, with Milli Alli finding his way past the Wrexham defence to get off a right footed shot that was saved by Foster, bouncing just ahead of Dieseruvwe who couldn’t quite get the rebound.
In the 32nd minute, Elliot Lee managed to find Wrexham’s opener. He was found through a long ball, turning onto his left foot and shooting from range on the left side just outside the box. His low driven shot managed to find its way past Johnson into the bottom right corner of the goal.
Wrexham found themselves in a 3 on 3 situation near Town’s box and managed to get a good strike on goal from range, but Johnson palmed the ball away well. Jacob Mendy was found open near the Town box, but his shot was again saved by Johnson, going out for a throw in. A long throw from Wrexham captain Ben Tozer managed to find the head of a Wrexham player in the box, but the ball was caught comfortably by Johnson.
Mani Dieseruvwe managed to find Town’s second-best chance of the game just before the 45-minute mark, using some skilful footwork to get s right footed shot off in the box that was just wide of the left side of the goal.
Wrexham won another corner in the 45th minute after James Jones’ long-range shot was driven away by Johnson. Lee’s corner managed to find the head of Tunnicliffe in the box, with his effort hitting the bar. Wrexham won another corner after, but the ball was easily cleared away by Town. Ben Tozer took multiple long throws into the box in the last few minutes of added time, but his throws into the box were eventually cleared away by the Town defence. Wrexham led 1-0 going into half time.
Halifax kicked off the second half very well, with Milli Alli scoring a minute in with a left footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner, celebrating with multiple somersaults in front of the Town fans.
Mani Dieseruvwe had another shot on goal from distance, however his shot was wide. Wrexham were given their second yellow card in the 51st minute after an O’Connell foul. Town’s effort from the following free kick was cleared by Wrexham, but Town managed to keep the ball near the Wrexham box, winning a corner in the 54th minute. Golden’s corner was cleared away.
Elliot Lee nearly created a good chance for Wrexham, finding his way into the Town box, but his efforts being stuffed by the Town defence. Paul Mullin also had a shot on target for Wrexham inside the box and was saved by Johnson.
In the 63rd minute Wrexham were given their second yellow after Milli Alli was brought down by Ben Tozer. Town’s following efforts nearly led to a good chance inside the box from Jamie Cooke, that was cleared but found its way out to Jamie Cooke whose shot was over the bar.
In the 71st minute, Milli Alli put Town ahead with his second goal of the day, using some great footwork to feint past one defender and then get his left footed shot off in the box and find the bottom left corner, sending the Town fans wild. He found another shot just minutes later, that was deflected for a Town corner. The ball was cleared by Wrexham but won back by Capello, and Gilmour was found in the box for a left footed shot that was saved.
Wrexham made their first substitution in the 77th minute, with James Jones being replaced by Jordan Davies.
Ryan Barnett managed to find a good cross from the right side of the box in the 80th minute, winning a corner that came to nothing, and another corner soon after that had two Wrexham players going down in the box, but no penalty was given.
In the 84th minute, Milli Alli found Mani Dieseruvwe in the box, for an easy right footed finish past Foster, to take the Town lead up to 3-1. Dieseruvwe was shortly after found again alone on the counter but took just a bit too long before the chance was gone.
Tom O’Connor replaced Andrew Cannon for Wrexham just before the game kicked off again, and Dieseruvwe was brought off for Rob Harker a few minutes later, receiving a standing ovation from fans.
The referee added on 5 mins extra time, and moments later Wrexham won a foul on the left-hand side of the box. The cross was straight at the town defence however and was cleared away quite easily. Paul Mullin managed to get a shot on target soon after, but it was a comfortable save for Johnson.
Wrexham were putting on the pressure in the last few minutes, with O’Connor hitting a decent left footed shot, that just. Curled away from goal.
After one last minute free kick for Ben Foster, the referee blew the whistle, giving Town a massive 3-1 win against top of the league Wrexham. Town play again this Monday, away to York at 3 PM.
