Maidenhead United: It’s The Same Story Every Week

Following FC Halifax Town’s 1-0 defeat against Maidenhead United, manager Chris Millington spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game.

“Flat, disappointing, and it’s just the same story every week,” Millington said. “We conceded a very poor goal. Two shots on target they’ve had in the game, one in the first half and one in the second and we conceded one. For all the possession and the pressure we have in the second half, we can’t put the ball in the back of the net. That’s our biggest issue, but we also conceded a very soft goal. That’s the story of the game again.”

Town conceded an avoidable goal on the 10th minute, after a quick counter-attack was well finished by Ashley Nathaniel-George.

“We showed the lads the footage of our game down in Maidenhead,” Millington told Shaymen TV. “One of their threats is the quick counter-attack when they win it back in midfield. They picked it up and they drive forward with Smith, Nathaniel-George, and Sam Barrett. They’re good, they’re quick and direct on the counter-attack. We showed the players our own game against Maidenhead and we’ve been undone by something we were well aware of as a threat of theirs. But, they haven’t had to work hard enough to score a goal and we huff and puff for over an hour after that but never really looked like scoring. We’ve had a couple of goalmouth scrambles, and one or two shouts for handball, but really, if we are honest about, have they gone away feeling under any significant threat, I think the answer to that is probably no.”

Millington made two changes at half time with Jamie Cooke and Fidel O’Rourke coming on for Max Wright and Milli Alli respectively.

“Disappointing reasons to make the change,” Millington said. “Max Wright’s hamstring went at the end of the half, and Milli Alli rocked up this morning with a bout of food poisoning so we knew it was a gamble starting him. So the double change, although it would have happened at some point in the second half, it was enforced at the time when it happened. Then we’ve also changed our third attacker that’s on the pitch in Rob Harker going on for Mani Dieseruvwe. Although Fidel has had some joy getting down the channel and getting us up the pitch, out of the six forwards that we have played today, we haven’t done enough to get anything out of the game. That’s something we have got to look at.”

Up next for the Shaymen sees Wealdstone visit the Shay on Tuesday night, and Millington is hoping for an improved performance and result.

“We have another opportunity to put it right and we have got to put it right,” Millington told Shaymen TV. “It’s great to see the likes of Jamie Cooke coming back and Luke Summerfield making the bench today, but we’ve got to find a formula within this group of players that can turn these abject performances into victories. It has got to change quickly.”
