Following FC Halifax Town’s 3-0 win over St Ives Town in the FA Cup, manager Chris Millington spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game.

“For the first 20-25 minutes I really enjoyed it,” Millington said. “From our perspective it was a really good, controlled performance. We got that goal and then took our foot off the gas a little too much and allowed them back into the game. To St Ives’ credit, they took the initiative after that. We still controlled the first half, barring those last mad five minutes, which gave us shades of performances earlier in the season, so we’ve got to pay some attention to that. But, first half we were fairly content, then in the second half, we never got control of the game like we would’ve wanted to yet we’ve scored two goals. All in all, for us today the result is the important thing. People will question how consistent I am as I often talk about the performance being the most important thing which we want week in, week out, but today I’ll take the result.”

Town got off to a strong start and dominated the opening period with Jamie Cooke netting his first goal for the club to cap off the positive start.

“We feel we probably could’ve put the ball in the box a bit more often,” Millington told Shaymen TV. “We had some really good controlled possession. I thought Jordan Slew was excellent, cutting in across the line, firing ball across the six-yard box. Jamie Cooke has been a thorn in their side, coming off his shape and threatening in behind. He’s got a goal and taken it really well. Some of the general play as well was very very good. We controlled possession and just picked them apart at will for the first 20 minutes or so. That’s something we now want to build on. But, to St Ives’ credit, they’ve come back into the game and threw caution to the wind as the game has gone on. They showed what a good side they and they made a real come of it so I’d say 3-0 was probably a little unfair on them.”

Despite heavy pressure from St Ives, Town were able to double their advantage thanks to Angelo Cappello’s first goal for the club before Mani Dieseruvwe sealed the victory in added time.

“They changed it and came at us a bit higher up the pitch in the second half,” Millington said. “That tactic worked. They possibly paid us a little too much respect in the first half in that they allowed us possession in certain areas. But when they came after us, it became more difficult for us to control possession and it gave them the incentive and they felt they could potentially get something from the game. But Angelo’s goal has really killed it off. After that then they didn’t carry as much threat so that second goal was all important. We know how important the first goal is in games like this, but today, the second goal was just as important.”

Up next for the Shaymen is a return to league action as Dagenham & Redbridge make the trip to the Shay, and Millington is anticipating an exciting game.

“Dagenham will be tough opposition,” Millington told Shaymen TV. “We always have good games with Dagenham. I like the way they play, I like the style of football Daryl McMahon tried to get out of his team. I had the opportunity to go and watch them on Tuesday night against York City so I’ve got a good feel for what they’ll be about. I know there’ll be one of two changes going into playing us. But I think it’ll be a really good game of football. They’ll look to get it down and knock it about, they’re athletic, they want to get it forward and they counter-attack well.”
