Following FC Halifax Town’s first win of the season, manager Chris Millington spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game.

“It was a good game,” Millington said. “Possibly a game of two halves. I thought we were quite strong and controlled what went on in the first half, but then in the second we had to weather a little bit of a storm. All of the lads have made a contribution to the result today. We’ve had Sam Johnson making saves, Jesse Debrah making last ditch tackles and blocks, and we’ve had the forwards retaining possession and scrapping for balls to make sure we stay high up the pitch. So, for the first time this season really, we’ve had every player contribute for the full 94 minutes and really earn the result which is pleasing.”

Kian Spence opened the scoring and his account for the season as he saw his freekick deflect off the wall and loop into the back of the net.

“We’ve seen goals against us late in the first half and we were mindful of that,” Millington told Shaymen TV. “We wanted, as a staff, to make sure we were on it and aware of what stage of the half we were at so we could make sure the lads were aware and maintain the game plan right up to the 45th minute. Just so that we didn’t make any silly mistakes and give ourselves a big challenge going into the second half. Thankfully, Kian’s freekick has resulted in us going into half time in the lead which I think we deserved.”

Despite plenty of pressure from the hosts late on, Jordan Slew’s 88th minute goal ensured Town picked up our first three points of the season.

“We’ve got to recognise Scunthorpe are a good team,” Millington said. “I know they’re on a difficult run with some poor results, but they have got some good players. They’ve got an experienced manager who knows how to get the best out of teams and they showed that in the second half. They really came at us but it was excellent how we coped with that and then to hit them on the counter was especially pleasing because we expected to get an opportunity, then Jordan Slew in his own cool calm way managed to slot it and give us the victory.”

Town travel to Maidenhead United on Saturday and will be looking to pick up another three points and continue to climb the table.

“It always is a tough game and a challenging place to go to,” Millington told Shaymen TV. “We know what to expect from Maidenhead but they are one of those teams that can take points off anyone in the league. They’re always competitive, always physical, and always direct. They’ll work their socks off for the full 90 minutes and we’ll have to be equally as resilient as we were today. We’ve got the quality to go there and get the result, but that won’t come easily, we’ll have to go and earn it.”
