Jordan Slewโ€™s first goal since the 8th January against Eastleigh and Matt Warburtonโ€™s 13th goal of the season helped FC Halifax Town to a 2-0 victory over fellow play-off chasers Chesterfield and now sees Town in 3rd place 7 points above their visitors and 5 points above Solihull in 4th place.

Town boss Pete Wild made three changes from the Good Friday 1-1 draw at Altrincham with Gerry McDonagh, Kian Spence and Javid Swaby-Neavin replaced by Luke Summerfield, Tom Bradbury and Jordan Slew whilst Chesterfield made no changes to their side who beat Wealdstone last time out and included former Town players Tom Denton and Jeff King in their starting XI.

In the early stages, the visitors earnt a corner that former Town midfielder Jeff King took short, but Town were strong at the back and prevented any efforts at goal.

Luke Summerfield looked for the run of Waters on 15 minutes down the left-hand side, he looked for Harvey Gilmour, but it was cleared out for a throw. Town then forced their first corner, Matt Warburtonโ€™s ball into the box was not dealt with by Scott Loach but the referee gave the freekick for a foul.

A freekick into the Town half for the away side looked for Tom Denton, he won the header into the box, but he was penalised by referee Thomas Kirk

Good run by Tom Bradbury from left back, he beat a number of defenders, but his effort was straight at Scott Loach from the edge of the box.

Slew was fouled by Grimes, Matt Warburtonโ€™s freekick was taken quickly as he looked for Waters, but Gavin Gunning was aware of Waters run and was able to clear the ball.

Chesterfield had the ball in the net just before the half hour mark, but the Spireites were denied the opening goal, Liam Mandevilleโ€™s cross was headed home by Tom Denton, but the assistant referee signalled for a foul by Denton in the build-up on Bradbury.

A freekick by Johnson was headed up in the air and fell kindly for Waters into the box, he looked for Harvey Gilmour having cut back, but he screwed his shot wide of the target

Another corner for the visitors from King was headed out, Denton back into the mix but Johnson was able to claim the ball.

Townโ€™s best opportunity of the half came from a Harvey Gilmour corner, there was Town players lining up, Kieran Greenโ€™s effort was blocked and then the ball fell to Jesse Debrah, but goalkeeper Scott Loach low save stopped the Shaymen going ahead and went out for another corner.

Chesterfield worked an opportunity with Liam Mandevilleโ€™s effort on the turn was saved by Johnson into the side netting for a corner, Kingโ€™s ball in and Johnson was able to punch clear.

Freekick for a foul by King on Summerfield at the start of the second half, Matt Warburtonโ€™s ball into the box went over Scott Loachโ€™s outstretched hand but narrowly wide of the post.

Play was stopped for a head injury to captain Niall Maher after a collision with Tom Denton, but the referee saw no foul in the challenge.

Good strength from Slew got himself into the box, he steadied himself and found Warburton. His effort was wide of the target

The visiting fans and players wanted a penalty on the hour mark, Aksawi Asante went down under a challenge from Niall Maher and the referee deemed no freekick.

Jim Kellermann was the first man into the refereeโ€™s book for a foul on Luke Summerfield.

On 66 minutes, the visitors had the goal in their sight. A good run by Quigley through on goal, who had come on for Tom Denton and he fired over the bar before Chesterfield forced another chance from Asante straight at Johnson.

Miller got to the by-line; his cross was headed tamely to Johnson by Quigley when Asante was in a better position to have had the effort.

Good defending by Niall Maher as Mandeville looked to get into the box after some good play by the visitors.

Asante turned Maher and ran goal wards, his effort saved by the legs off Johnson

King had time at the edge of the box, cut inside and found time to get his shot in but it was high and wide of Sam Johnsonโ€™s goal.

Waters down the left-hand side, his ball into the box was dummied by Spence and Slew fired first time past Loach to send the majority of the 3294 crowd into raptures.

Chesterfield had chance to equalise straight away, Summerfield didnโ€™t clear the ball out and Kingโ€™s effort was blocked and out for another corner. Kingโ€™s ball into the box was headed down and then headed wide of the target by Asante

The missed chances by the visitors were penalised as Matt Warburtonโ€™s shot from the edge of the box deflected past Loach for 2-0.

Chesterfield looked for a way back into the game with Kingโ€™s freekick into the box, Asante looked to get his header towards goal, but the offside flag was up against him

Asante continued to make a nuisance of himself and was fouled in injury time just outside the penalty box. Treatment was needed for Tom Bradbury in the aftermath. Kingโ€™s effort was over the bar.

The result leaves the Shaymen in third place in the table with five games remaining of the Vanarama National League season and next up will be a trip to Southend United, 3pm kick-off.
