FC Halifax Town made it 5 wins on the bounce as they defeated Torquay United 2-0 at The Shay this afternoon.

An excellent second-half performance wrapped up all three points for Town, with goals from Billy Waters and Gerry McDonagh proving to be the difference between the two sides.

In the 2nd minute, The Shaymen came close to opening the scoring from a set-piece. Jordan Slew won a free-kick on the left which was whipped in by Luke Summerfield, forcing Shaun MacDonald in the Torquay goal to parry the ball out to safety.

After coming close in the early stages however, it was a sub-par first-half performance from Town, with Torquay having the majority of the opportunities.

The closest the visitors came was in the 7th minute, when a free kick from captain Armani Little was met by the head of Connor Lemonheigh Evans, with Sam Johnson making a good low save to keep it out.

Minutes later, Armani Little was again involved in a chance for The Gulls as he advanced into the penalty area and fired a shot towards the bottom corner, but it was well blocked by Tom Bradbury and cleared to safety.

Torquay continued to put the pressure on when Tom Lapslie picked out Danny Wright, with the striker controlling well before getting his shot away, which whistled just past the post.

Town only really threatened from distance as the second half wore on, as they struggled to get Billy Waters into the game, and the sides went into the break all square.

The second half started brighter for The Shaymen, and they began putting Torquay on the back foot right from the off. Jamie Thomas had a great opportunity when he was slipped in on the right by Matty Warburton. The midfielder got a powerful shot away on his right foot which Shaun MacDonald initially droppped, but he recovered well to keep it out.

Despite Town’s increased attacking output, Torquay continued to threaten as the game became a lot more end-to-end. Danny Wright came very close as he hit the post after good build up play from Stephen Wearne, before Halifax fired back with a chance of their own as Matty Warburton struck just wide from the edge of the box.

The Shaymen continued to get better as the game went on, and again came close just before the hour mark after a corner was reworked well by Matty Warburton, who crossed for Tyrell Warren, with the right back’s header kept out by a good save from Shaun MacDonald at his near post.

Just minutes later, Town’s pressure paid off. Billy Waters found himself 12 yards out, and fired the ball powerfully into the bottom right corner on his left-foot, giving his side the all-important lead with his 15th league goal of the season against his former club.

The Shaymen continued to push, and had their second goal in the 70th minute, courtesy of a brilliantly worked free-kick routine. Matty Warburton picked out Niall Maher, who headed the ball across the face of the area to substitute Gerry McDonagh, who headed home his first league goal to double his sides lead.

After securing their 2-0 lead, Town looked in control as they saw the rest of the game out with ease, as it finished FC Halifax Town 2-0 Torquay United.
