Pontefract Collieries: I’ve Been Waiting For That

Following FC Halifax Town’s 1-0 win over Pontefract Collieries in the FA Cup, manager Pete Wild spoke to Shaymen TV to give his thoughts on the game.

“We certainly had a lot of possession,” Wild said. “We found it hard though to break them down and like Saturday they have defended for their lives. The keeper was in inspirational form for them like he was on Saturday. We had to stick to the plan today and I know the fans can get frustrated about us not slinging it into the box or booting it forward. But we aren’t a massive team to allow us to boot it into the box. We have a plan which often works and we stuck to it tonight and we got our just rewards for it.”

Jack Vale netted the only goal of the game to win it for the Shaymen as the forward gets himself off the mark for the season.

“I’m really pleased for Jack,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “He has had a couple of false starts with injuries and his international duty with Wales. So for him to take his opportunity tonight, I’m delighted because he is a goal scorer. That’s what he has done tonight to win us the game.”

The win tonight sees Wild get his first victory in the FA Cup since he beat Fulham with Oldham back in 2019.

“I’ve been waiting for that,” Wild said. “I’m delighted to get that hoodoo off my back. It’s been one of those things that has been eating away at me. So it was a case of getting any win, I didn’t really care, I just wanted to get that hoodoo off my back.”

That victory sets up a first round tie against fellow Vanarama National League side Maidenhead United, and Wild is hoping to right some wrongs from the opening day of the season.

“They’re the only team to come here and win,” Wild told Shaymen TV. “We need to put some wrongs right against them and we are looking forward to doing so. But up next is a big game for us against Solihull. We’re two teams playing some good football at the moment so it should be a really good football match. We’ll dust ourselves down after tonight and we will be ready to go.”
