FC Halifax Town secured their first home win of the season this afternoon, with a 2-0 victory over Altrincham at The Shay.

A second-half strike from Jordan Slew and Billy Waters were the difference between the two sides, in a dominant performance from the Shaymen.

The first chance of the game fell to Jack Senior in the third minute as his strike from just inside the area found the target but failed to trouble Altrincham keeper Anthony Thompson. Minutes later, a Jordan Slew effort from the right almost found the net, but for a good save by Thompson at his near post.

Slew continued to threaten when in the 28th minute a brilliant through ball unlocked the visitors’ defence, picking out Jay Benn, who controlled well and got a shot away, however his shot was blocked and eventually cleared.

The closest either team came to taking the lead in the first-half came out of nothing for Halifax in the 33rd minute, when a throw in from the left found its way to Matty Warburton 25 yards out, who turned and fired a shot that looked destined for the top left corner, if not for another smart stop by Anthony Thompson to keep the scores level.

Altrincham were limited to a few clear cut chances in the first half, but began to create more just before half-time. Ryan Colcough was the key man for the visitors as he provided Marcus Dinanga with a great ball from the left, with the striker miscuing his strike, before having a shot of his own moments later which went narrowly wide.

After what had been a dominant display that was just missing a goal, The Shaymen broke the deadlock in the 59th minute. An Altrincham free-kick deep in Halifax’s half was well dealt with, and The Shaymen capitalised on the visitors throwing men forward by countering brilliantly. Billy Waters picked out Jordan Slew on the right, who finished brilliantly with a strike in the bottom right corner to bag his first goal for the club, and provide a deserved 1-0 lead.

As the second half wore on, the game became a lot more cagey, with both sides struggling to break each other down and create opportunities. However, the visitors came close in the 63rd minute. Dan Mooney and Marcus Dinanga linked up well down the right, before picking out Josh Hancock inside the penalty area, however the Altrincham man miscued his shot and failed to threaten Sam Johnson in the Halifax goal.

It took until the 84th minute, but eventually Halifax doubled their lead and put the game out of the visitors reach. A Jack Senior cross from the left picked out Waters who miscued his initial effort, however the ball was recycled and picked up by Jamie Allen and found it’s way back to Waters, who made no mistake at the second time of asking and fired the ball into the bottom left corner.

Halifax continued to defend brilliantly in the latter stages of the game and despite needing two goals, the visitors never looked like getting one. A cross from the right by Bradley Jackson that picked out Marcus Dinanga was the closest Altrincham came, however his header was tame and was easily caught by Sam Johnson.

Altrincham threw bodies forward looking to take advantage of free kicks in promising positions in stoppage time, however they failed to trouble the solid Shaymen backline, with it finishing FC Halifax Town 2-0 Altrincham.
