FC Halifax Town will be bitterly disappointed with tonight’s 2-1 defeat away at Barnet.  Despite enjoying large amounts of possession, Town were unable to find the winning formula.

Pete Wild made 2 changes to the starting line up from the Maidenhead game for tonight’s trip to The Hive to face Barnet FC.  Martin Woods and Jamie Allen returned replacing Dom Tear who was on the bench and Lewis Mansell who returned to his parent club Accrington Stanley after a loan spell at The Shay.

When the sides met in West Yorkshire in December The Shaymen ended 5-2 winners aided by a Jeff King goal within the first minute.  On this occasion it was Barnet who almost scored within a minute when Anthony Wordsworth met a left wing cross which forced Sam Johnson into a low save.

Town’s main attacking threat came on the right side with Jeff King enjoying plenty of the ball and plenty of space.  He linked up with Kieran Green whose 20 yard shot was turned away for a corner by Scott Loach.  King almost beat Loach at his near post with an in-swinging corner but the keeper cleared. Tahvon Campbell almost got in on goal but was narrowly offside as Town pressed.  And Campbell had penalty appeals turned away as he attempted to latch onto a low cross from the right.

There was a let off in the 26th minute when an unmarked Liam Daly was just off target with a low shot but the hosts took the lead soon after when Michael Petrasso latched onto a loose ball, advanced forward and beat Johnson with a low finish.  Town responded with Jack Senior and Tom Bradbury linking on the left but the low cross evaded Jamie Allen and Tahvon Campbell.

Barnet doubled their lead with 45 minutes on the clock.  A throw in on the Barnet left broke to Wordsworth and his curling 25 yard shot landed in the top corner giving Johnson no chance at all.  But Town ended the half on a high with a goal in injury time.  Campbell received the ball from a throw and found Jeff King in space on the right side of the penalty area and his emphatic powerful finish beat Loach at his near post.

Town came out strongly at the start of the 2nd half. Jack Earing had a shot which deflected to keeper Loach as the visitors pressed.  Jeff King’s shot was cleared for a corner, the first of a number of corners that The Shaymen were unable to capitalise on with towering Barnet defender Liam Daly clearing regularly.  Barnet were content to play on the counter attack but ironically it was Town that threatened with their own counter attack but ex Shayman Jerome Binnom-Williams produced a timely tackle to prevent Jeff King getting in on goal.

Another Earing shot was blocked and from a free kick the ball broke to substitute Jake Hyde whose shot was cleared for a corner.  Some neat play by Hyde on the right found King in space but his teasing cross was cleared with Green ready to pounce at the back post.  Hyde headed a corner over the bar and the game ended with a 2-1 victory for the hosts.

Town will make the long trip to the south coast on Saturday and will face Torquay United in front of the BT Sport cameras, 5.20pm kick-off.
